Fasting in times of hardship: A test of faith
Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam, and it holds immense spiritual significance. While fasting during the month of Ramadan is obligatory for all able Muslims, fasting also teaches self-discipline, empathy, and patience. However, fasting during times of hardship, such as personal challenges, loss, illness, or during extraordinary circumstances, serves as a unique test of faith for a believer. The ability to endure such challenges while maintaining devotion to Allah (SWT) and continuing acts of worship is a true reflection of a person’s iman (faith).
When we face hardships in life, it can be tempting to lose focus on our faith and the obligations of worship. Fasting during such times, however, strengthens the relationship between a Muslim and Allah (SWT) and reinforces patience and trust in divine wisdom. In this blog post, we will explore how fasting in times of hardship serves as a powerful test of faith, with insights from the Quran and Hadith to guide us.
The Spiritual Significance of Fasting
Fasting is not merely an act of abstaining from food and drink, but it is a means of spiritual purification. Allah (SWT) has prescribed fasting as a way to achieve taqwa (God-consciousness), which is essential for a believer. The Quran clearly outlines the purpose of fasting in Surah Al-Baqarah:
يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا كُتِبَ عَلَيْكُمُ الصِّيَامُ كَمَا كُتِبَ عَلَى الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ
“O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous.” (Quran 2:183)
The verse indicates that fasting is a means to increase taqwa, or consciousness of Allah. Taqwa is often tested during times of hardship, as it requires a believer to endure difficulty while maintaining trust in Allah’s plan. Fasting during such times of struggle becomes an act of unwavering faith and dependence on Allah’s mercy.
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is reported to have said:
الصِّيَامُ جُنَّةٌ، فَإِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ صَوْمِ أَحَدِكُمْ، فَلا يَرْفُثْ وَلا يَسْخَبْ، فَإِنْ سَابَّهُ أَحَدٌ أَوْ قَاتَلَهُ، فَلْيَقُلْ: إِنِّي صَائِمٌ
“Fasting is a shield. So, if one of you is fasting, let him not indulge in immoral speech and behavior, and if someone fights or insults him, let him say: ‘I am fasting.'” (Sahih Al-Bukhari)
This Hadith teaches that fasting protects us from immoral behavior and strengthens our willpower, especially in times of difficulty. It is not just about abstaining from food; it is about maintaining dignity, patience, and control over one’s actions and reactions.
Fasting as a Test of Faith in Times of Hardship
When a believer experiences hardship, such as financial struggle, illness, the loss of a loved one, or natural calamities, it can become increasingly difficult to maintain the same level of devotion to Allah. These challenging circumstances may create feelings of frustration, doubt, or even despair. However, it is during these very moments that fasting becomes not just a physical discipline but a spiritual test of one’s faith.

Patience in the Face of Adversity
Fasting teaches patience in times of ease and hardship. The hardship of fasting itself—being hungry and thirsty during the day—teaches a person to endure and develop patience. This is especially significant when facing personal difficulties. The challenge of fasting during difficult times mirrors the challenge of remaining patient through life’s struggles.
The Quran highlights the virtue of patience during trials:
وَلَنَبْلُوَنَّكُمْ بِشَيْءٍ مِّنَ الْخَوْفِ وَالْجُوعِ وَنَقْصٍ مِّنَ الْأَمْوَالِ وَالْأَنفُسِ وَالثَّمَرَاتِ ۗ وَبَشِّرِ الصَّابِرِينَ
“And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.” (Quran 2:155)
This verse assures believers that trials and difficulties are a part of life, and those who remain patient will receive the reward of Allah. Fasting, in times of hardship, requires a deep sense of patience as one continues to trust Allah’s wisdom and mercy.
Strengthening the Relationship with Allah (SWT)
Fasting in difficult times forces believers to focus on their relationship with Allah. The act of fasting, coupled with the extra supplications, dhikr, and prayers during hardships, draws the heart closer to Allah. This connection becomes even more essential when a person is feeling overwhelmed by the hardships they are facing.
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was known to advise Muslims to increase their worship during times of difficulty:
إِذَا ابْتُلِيَ الْعَبْدُ بِمُصِيبَةٍ قَالَتِ الْمَلَائِكَةُ: يَا ابْنَ آدَمَ، إِنَّ رَبَّكَ يَقُولُ لَكَ: إِنْ صَبَرْتَ غَفَرْتُ لَكَ
“When a servant is afflicted with a trial, the angels say: ‘O son of Adam, your Lord is saying to you: ‘If you are patient, I will forgive you.'” (Sahih Muslim)
This Hadith emphasizes the connection between hardship and Allah’s mercy. Fasting during hardship brings an opportunity to strengthen one’s bond with Allah through sincere worship, supplication, and trust in His divine will.
Relying on Allah’s Plan
During times of difficulty, fasting reminds the believer to rely on Allah’s plan and to trust in His decree. It is a time to reflect on the truth that every hardship is a test from Allah, and that there is wisdom behind every trial. Fasting in hardship teaches a person to surrender to the will of Allah, knowing that He is in control and that there is a greater purpose behind every challenge.
The Quran assures believers that Allah does not burden anyone beyond their capacity:
لَا يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا ۚ
“Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear.” (Quran 2:286)
This verse offers comfort and reassurance that even in the most trying times, a believer will not be tested beyond their limits. The test is a means of purification and an opportunity for the believer to grow in faith.
Increasing Gratitude
Fasting, particularly during times of hardship, fosters gratitude for the blessings we have, whether they are health, wealth, or loved ones. The challenge of fasting reminds a person of the basic blessings of food, water, and comfort that are often taken for granted. During times of hardship, this gratitude can transform a difficult situation into an opportunity for spiritual growth.
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:
لَيْسَ المُؤْمِنُ الَّذِي يَشْبَعُ وَجَارُهُ جَائِعٌ إِلَى جَنْبِهِ
“He is not a believer whose stomach is full while his neighbor goes hungry.”
Fasting in times of difficulty allows the believer to empathize with others who may be facing similar or even greater struggles, fostering compassion and charity.
Fasting During the Loss of a Loved One
The loss of a loved one is one of the most difficult tests that a believer can face. It is a time of emotional distress and mourning, and the act of fasting during such times serves as a reminder that life and death are in Allah’s hands. Fasting during these times helps to cultivate patience and trust in Allah’s plan for His creation.
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) faced the death of his beloved wife, Khadijah (RA), and his son, Ibrahim, with remarkable patience and reliance on Allah. When Ibrahim passed away, the Prophet (PBUH) said:
إِنَّ الْعَيْنَ تَدْمَعُ، وَالْقَلْبَ يَحْزَنُ، وَلَا نَقُولُ إِلَّا مَا يُرْضِي رَبَّنَا
“The eyes are shedding tears, and the heart is grieving, but we will not say anything except that which pleases Allah.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
This Hadith reminds us of the importance of patience during times of loss. Fasting during these moments becomes a powerful means of coping, as it allows the believer to focus on worship, patience, and trust in Allah.
Fasting During Illness or Physical Hardship
For those who experience illness or physical hardship, fasting may seem especially challenging. However, fasting during illness also provides a unique opportunity for spiritual reflection. It allows a person to rely on Allah for strength and healing, while also engaging in prayer, supplication, and acts of charity.
Allah (SWT) says in the Quran:
وَإِذَا مَرِضْتُ فَهُوَ يَشْفِينِ
“And when I am ill, it is He who cures me.” (Quran 26:80)
This verse highlights the relationship between illness and faith. Fasting during illness serves as a reminder of our dependence on Allah for both physical and spiritual healing.
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:
إِذَا مَرِضَ العَبْدُ أَوْ سَافَرَ كُتِبَ لَهُ مِثْلُ مَا كَانَ يَعْمَلُ مُقِيمًا صَحِيحًا
“If a servant of Allah falls ill or suffers a hardship, Allah rewards him as if he were fasting while healthy.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
This Hadith provides hope for those struggling with illness, as it assures them that the reward for fasting in times of difficulty remains with them, even if they are unable to physically fast.
Conclusion
Fasting during times of hardship is one of the most profound ways to strengthen a Muslim’s faith. It is a test of patience, perseverance, and reliance on Allah’s plan. The practice of fasting in such challenging circumstances cultivates empathy, gratitude, and a deep sense of connection to Allah (SWT).
As the Quran and Hadith indicate, fasting during hardship is not only a test of physical endurance but also a means of spiritual purification and growth. The lessons learned during these moments can help believers navigate life’s challenges with resilience, patience, and unwavering faith. Through fasting, we are reminded of the transient nature of hardship and the ultimate reward for those who remain steadfast in their worship of Allah.
In times of hardship, fasting transforms suffering into an opportunity for spiritual development, reminding us that our true strength comes from our faith and trust in Allah. Through fasting, we are reminded that hardship is not the end, but a test that leads to greater reward in the hereafter. May Allah grant us all the patience, perseverance, and faith to fast during times of difficulty and emerge from these trials stronger in our devotion to Him.
