One of the Greatest Trials is the Dajjal (False Messiah)

The Dajjal (الدجال) is one of the most terrifying figures in Islamic eschatology. Often referred to as the “False Messiah” or “Antichrist,” the Dajjal is considered one of the greatest trials that will afflict humanity before the end of time. His emergence will mark the final stages of the world, leading to cataclysmic events that will test the faith, resilience, and loyalty of individuals. The Quran and Hadith provide various descriptions and warnings about the Dajjal, and they stress the importance of being aware of his characteristics and the trials associated with him.

In this blog post, we will explore the concept of the Dajjal in Islam, analyzing the various Quranic verses and Hadith (sayings of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him) in their original Arabic form, along with English translations. We will also delve into the specific nature of the Dajjal’s trial, how to recognize him, and how to protect oneself from his deceptions.

Who is the Dajjal?

The word Dajjal comes from the Arabic root “دجل” which means to deceive, mislead, or cover up. The Dajjal is described as a false messiah who will appear in the final days, pretending to be a savior and leading people astray. He will possess extraordinary powers that allow him to deceive vast numbers of people, showing them false miracles and tempting them with promises of wealth, comfort, and safety. His appearance will be a test of faith for humanity, and only those with strong belief in Allah will be able to withstand his trials.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasized the Dajjal as the most dangerous trial that Muslims will face in the final days. He warned that the Dajjal would appear at a time of great unrest, and his arrival would herald the approach of the end of the world.

Quranic References to the Dajjal

Although the Dajjal is not mentioned by name in the Quran, there are several verses that allude to his characteristics and the events surrounding his appearance. These verses highlight the deception, confusion, and trials that will accompany the Dajjal’s emergence.

Surah Al-Kahf (18:99-101)

Translation:
“And We will gather them all together, and We will say: ‘Drink from the water of Hell.'”

Although these verses in Surah Al-Kahf do not directly reference the Dajjal, scholars interpret them as part of the overall eschatological signs that are associated with the end of time, when deception, confusion, and trials will be rampant. The references to “gathering” people together and “guiding” them to their final destiny are seen as linked to the tribulation caused by the Dajjal.

Surah An-Nisa (4:157-158)

Translation:
“And [for] their saying, ‘Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the messenger of Allah.’ And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it except the following of assumption. And they did not kill him for certain.”

This verse is important in understanding the context of the Dajjal’s appearance. The Dajjal will claim to be the Messiah, which is why it is significant that the Quran makes it clear that the true Messiah (Isa or Jesus) was neither crucified nor killed. The Dajjal will attempt to deceive people by falsely claiming to be Jesus, but his claims will be a lie.

One of the Greatest Trials is the Dajjal (False Messiah)

Hadith References to the Dajjal

In the Hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) provides a more detailed description of the Dajjal, his characteristics, and the events surrounding his emergence. There are numerous narrations that warn Muslims of the Dajjal’s deceitful nature and the severe trials that he will bring.

The Dajjal’s Appearance

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) described the Dajjal in detail, emphasizing his physical features and the extraordinary powers he would possess. One of the most important features is that the Dajjal will be blind in one eye.

Hadith:
Translation:
Abdullah bin Umar (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: “The Dajjal is blind in the right eye, and his eye looks like a floating grape.”

This description highlights the Dajjal’s physical imperfection, which will be a clear sign of his falsehood. Despite this, he will possess remarkable powers that allow him to deceive the masses.

The Dajjal’s Deceptions

The Dajjal will possess the ability to perform what will seem like miracles, further confusing and deceiving those who are unaware of his true nature.

Hadith:
Translation:
Tamim ad-Dari (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: “The Dajjal will emerge and remain for forty days. He will be recognized by his face and will take from the tribes of the Arabs something, staying among them for a period.”

The Dajjal’s ability to deceive people will be unparalleled, and his appearance will be a significant test for the believers. His extraordinary abilities, such as controlling wealth, food, and other resources, will tempt many to follow him.

The Dajjal’s Influence

One of the Dajjal’s most dangerous traits is his ability to influence large groups of people. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) warned that the Dajjal would lead many astray, especially those who were weak in their faith.

Hadith:
Translation:
Abu Huraira (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: “The Dajjal will emerge from the Arab nation and will travel across the earth. There will be no one left except that he will be under his control.”

This Hadith emphasizes the global influence of the Dajjal. His ability to conquer and control vast territories will make him a formidable adversary. The trial of the Dajjal will affect everyone, and only those who hold firm to their faith in Allah will be able to withstand his deceptions.

The End of the Dajjal

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) also spoke about the eventual defeat of the Dajjal. It is believed that the Prophet Isa (AS) will return to earth to defeat the Dajjal and restore peace and justice.

Hadith:
Translation:
An-Nawas bin Sam’an (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: “The Muslims will fight the Dajjal until they kill him.”

The Dajjal’s reign will not last forever. With the help of Isa (AS), the Muslims will eventually triumph over him. This final victory will mark the beginning of a period of peace and righteousness before the final Day of Judgment.

Protection from the Dajjal

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) provided specific instructions on how to protect oneself from the trial of the Dajjal. One of the most important methods of protection is to seek refuge in Allah and to recite specific supplications.

The Dua for Protection from the Dajjal

Hadith:
Translation:
Abdullah bin Abbas (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: “Whoever hears about the Dajjal should seek refuge in Allah from his trial, for it is one of the greatest trials.”

This hadith highlights the importance of seeking protection from the Dajjal’s trial through prayer and supplication. Muslims are advised to recite specific duas for protection from the Dajjal, especially during times of fitnah (trials and tribulations).

The Importance of Knowledge

Another important way to protect oneself is by learning about the Dajjal’s characteristics and the signs of his appearance. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) warned that ignorance about the Dajjal would lead many astray, so knowledge is a key defense.

Conclusion

The Dajjal is one of the most significant and dangerous trials that humanity will face before the Day of Judgment. His ability to deceive, mislead, and tempt people into following him will be unparalleled. However, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) provided clear warnings and guidance to protect oneself from the Dajjal’s fitnah.

Muslims must be aware of the Dajjal’s characteristics, his signs, and the ways to protect themselves from his trials. By staying firm in their faith, seeking refuge in Allah, and remaining vigilant, believers can withstand the tribulations of the Dajjal and emerge victorious in the end. May Allah protect us all from the deception of the Dajjal and grant us steadfastness in our faith.
