(Indeed, We found him patient, an excellent servant. Indeed, he was one repeatedly turning back [to Allah].)
— (Surah Sad 38:44)
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) also emphasized the virtue of patience, saying:
(And whoever remains patient, Allah will make him patient.)
— (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6470)
The story of Ayyub (AS) teaches profound lessons on enduring trials with patience, gratitude, and hope. His unwavering faith serves as a source of inspiration for believers navigating life’s difficulties and striving for Allah’s pleasure.

Introduction to Prophet Ayyub (AS)
Prophet Ayyub (AS) was a man of great virtue, wealth, and influence. He was blessed with numerous children, vast riches, and a loving family. Despite his abundance, he remained humble, devoted to Allah, and generous to those in need. His unwavering piety earned him a special place among the Prophets.
Allah describes Ayyub (AS) in the Quran:
(Indeed, We found him patient, an excellent servant. Indeed, he was one repeatedly turning back [to Allah].)
— (Surah Sad 38:44)
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) praised Ayyub’s (AS) exemplary patience, affirming his legacy as a model for enduring hardship with unwavering trust in Allah.
The Trials of Prophet Ayyub (AS)
Prophet Ayyub (AS) was tested in unimaginable ways. Despite his righteousness, Allah permitted a series of trials to befall him as a test of his faith and patience.
Loss of Wealth and Family
In one devastating stroke, Ayyub (AS) lost all his wealth and property. His once-thriving life was reduced to destitution. Shortly thereafter, his children perished, leaving him with no worldly possessions or family support.
Affliction of Disease
As if the loss of wealth and family were not enough, Ayyub (AS) was afflicted with a debilitating disease that caused widespread pain and disfigurement. Despite this, he did not waver in his faith or complain about his circumstances.
His state is alluded to in the Quran:
(And [mention] Ayyub, when he called to his Lord, “Indeed, adversity has touched me, and You are the most merciful of the merciful.”)
— (Surah Al-Anbiya 21:83)
This verse reflects his humility and reliance on Allah. Instead of lamenting his suffering, he called upon Allah with complete trust in His mercy.
The Patience of Prophet Ayyub (AS)
Despite the severity of his trials, Prophet Ayyub (AS) displayed unmatched patience. He neither blamed Allah for his hardships nor sought relief through despair. His patience was characterized by three key attributes:
Gratitude in Hardship
Ayyub (AS) consistently expressed gratitude to Allah, even in the face of adversity. He recognized that the blessings he had enjoyed were from Allah and that trials were a part of life’s test.
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:
(Amazing is the affair of the believer! Verily, all his affairs are good, and this is not for anyone except the believer. If something good happens to him, he is grateful, and it becomes better for him. If something bad happens to him, he is patient, and it becomes better for him.)
— (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2999)
Trust in Allah’s Plan
Ayyub (AS) fully trusted Allah’s wisdom and plan, believing that his suffering was not without purpose. He refrained from questioning Allah’s decree and remained steadfast.
Allah commands believers to have similar trust:
(O you who have believed, persevere and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may be successful.)
— (Surah Aal-e-Imran 3:200)
No Complaints Against Allah
Prophet Ayyub (AS) never complained about his condition or questioned Allah’s wisdom. Instead, he focused on seeking Allah’s mercy with humility.
The Dua of Prophet Ayyub (AS)
One of the most remarkable aspects of Prophet Ayyub’s (AS) story is his supplication (dua) during his trial. His dua was simple yet profound, acknowledging Allah’s mercy and appealing to it:
(And [mention] Ayyub, when he called to his Lord, “Indeed, adversity has touched me, and You are the most merciful of the merciful.”)
— (Surah Al-Anbiya 21:83)
This supplication highlights the balance between expressing one’s pain to Allah and maintaining absolute reliance on His mercy. Ayyub (AS) did not demand relief but sought Allah’s help with humility.
The Reward for Patience
Prophet Ayyub’s (AS) patience and unwavering faith were eventually rewarded by Allah. His health was restored, his wealth was multiplied, and he was blessed with new children. Allah describes this in the Quran:
(So We responded to him and removed what afflicted him of adversity. And We gave him [back] his family and the like thereof with them as mercy from Us and a reminder for the worshippers [of Allah].)
— (Surah Al-Anbiya 21:84)
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) emphasized the reward for patience:
(No fatigue, nor disease, nor sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim, even if it were the prick he receives from a thorn, but that Allah expiates some of his sins for that.)
— (Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 5642)
