The Revival of Souls on the Day of Resurrection
The Day of Resurrection (Yawm al-Qiyamah) is a fundamental belief in Islam, marking the moment when all souls will be revived after death. It is a day of absolute justice, where every individual will be brought back to life, judged according to their deeds, and destined for either eternal bliss in Jannah (Paradise) or eternal suffering in Jahannam (Hellfire). The Quran and Hadith repeatedly affirm this reality, making it a certainty for every believer.
Many disbelievers have questioned resurrection, doubting how decomposed bodies can be revived. However, Allah (SWT) answers this skepticism in the Quran:
“And man says, ‘Will I be resurrected alive after I have died?’ Does man not remember that We created him before, when he was nothing?”
(Surah Maryam 19:66-67)
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) further confirmed the resurrection, saying:
“You will be gathered before Allah barefoot, naked, and uncircumcised.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 3349; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2860)
The revival of souls will occur after Angel Israfil (AS) blows the Trumpet for the second time, at which point every human who ever lived will rise from their graves. This article will delve into the Quranic evidence, Hadith references, and scholarly explanations on the resurrection and revival of souls on the Day of Judgment.
The Certainty of Resurrection in the Quran
The resurrection of all souls is an unquestionable reality in Islam. The Quran repeatedly affirms that mankind will be brought back to life after death and will face the consequences of their deeds.
Allah (SWT) states:
“Those who disbelieve claim that they will never be resurrected. Say, ‘Yes! By my Lord, you will certainly be resurrected; then you will be informed of what you did. And that is easy for Allah.’”
(Surah At-Taghabun 64:7)
This verse challenges the disbelief of those who reject the concept of resurrection and confirms its inevitability.
Similarly, Allah (SWT) emphasizes:
“And man says, ‘Will I be resurrected alive after I have died?'”
(Surah Maryam 19:66)
The answer is a resounding yes—as explained throughout the Quran and Hadith.

The First and Second Blowing of the Trumpet
The resurrection of all souls will be preceded by two major events:
The First Blowing of the Trumpet: The End of Life
The first blowing of the Trumpet (Sur) will bring universal destruction. It will mark the end of all life, causing the collapse of the heavens, the earth, and everything in existence.
Allah (SWT) describes this:
“Then, when the Trumpet is blown with a single blast, and the earth and the mountains are lifted and crushed with a single blow, on that Day, the inevitable event will have occurred.”
(Surah Al-Haqqah 69:13-15)
The Second Blowing of the Trumpet: The Revival of Mankind
The second blowing of the Trumpet will signal the resurrection, and every soul will be brought back to life.
Allah (SWT) describes:
“Then it will be blown again, and at once they will be standing, looking on.”
(Surah Az-Zumar 39:68)
The Process of Revival and Rising from the Graves
The revival of souls will occur after Angel Israfil (AS) blows the Trumpet (Sur) for the second time, signaling the resurrection of all of humanity. At that moment, every person who ever lived will be brought back to life and rise from their graves to face Allah’s judgment.
Allah (SWT) describes this scene:
“Then it will be blown again, and at once they will be standing, looking on.”
(Surah Az-Zumar 39:68)
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) explained that humans will emerge from their graves in a state of awe and fear:
“The Trumpet will be blown, and they will come out from their graves, hastening towards their Lord.”
(Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2955)
On that day, every person, young and old, believer and disbeliever, rich and poor, will be resurrected simultaneously. They will rise barefoot, naked, and uncircumcised, as stated by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 3349). The revived souls will then be gathered together, awaiting Allah’s final judgment.
The Physical State of Humans on That Day
On the Day of Resurrection (Yawm al-Qiyamah), when all souls are revived, humans will emerge from their graves in a state of complete vulnerability. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) described this moment, stating that people will be barefoot, naked, and uncircumcised, just as they were first created.
The Prophet (PBUH) said:
“People will be gathered on the Day of Judgment barefoot, naked, and uncircumcised.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 3349; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2860)
In their resurrected state, humans will feel a great sense of terror and anxiety, as they will be aware that they are standing before Allah (SWT) for judgment. The sun will be brought close, and people will be drenched in sweat according to the weight of their sins.
Allah (SWT) describes this scene in the Quran:
“And you will see the people as if they are drunk, though they are not drunk; but the punishment of Allah is severe.”
(Surah Al-Hajj 22:2)
This physical and emotional state of resurrection will remind every soul of the temporary nature of this world and the reality of the Hereafter.
The Gathering for Judgment
After rising from their graves, all of humanity will be gathered for judgment before Allah (SWT). This event, known as Al-Hashr (The Gathering), will take place in an immense, open plain where every human, from Adam (AS) to the last soul created, will stand together.
Allah (SWT) describes this scene in the Quran:
“On that Day, We shall gather the righteous before the Most Merciful as honored guests. And We shall drive the criminals to Hell like a thirsty herd.”
(Surah Maryam 19:85-86)
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) described the terrifying nature of this gathering:
“On the Day of Judgment, people will be gathered in three groups: those who walked willingly, those who were forced, and those who crawled on their faces.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 6527)
On this day, people will be terrified, some begging for mercy, while others will be rejoicing. The records of deeds (Suhuf al-A‘mal) will be distributed, and every soul will be confronted with its actions, standing in front of Allah (SWT) for the final judgment.
Final Destinations: Jannah or Jahannam
After the Day of Judgment, every soul will be led to its eternal destination—either Jannah (Paradise) or Jahannam (Hellfire)—based on their deeds and Allah’s ultimate justice and mercy.
Allah (SWT) says in the Quran:
“A group will be in Paradise, and a group will be in the blazing Fire.”
(Surah Ash-Shura 42:7)
Jannah: The Ultimate Reward
Jannah is a place of eternal peace, joy, and divine blessings, prepared for the righteous believers. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:
“In it is what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and what has never crossed the heart of a human.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 3244)
Jahannam: The Ultimate Punishment
For the disbelievers and wrongdoers, Jahannam is a place of eternal torment and suffering. Allah (SWT) warns:
“So taste (the punishment), for We will not increase you except in torment.”
(Surah An-Naba 78:30)
Every soul’s eternal fate will be sealed based on Allah’s justice and mercy, marking the final stage of human existence.
Conclusion: A Reminder of Our Inevitable Return
The revival of souls on the Day of Resurrection is an undeniable reality affirmed by Allah (SWT) in the Quran and the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in Hadith. It is the day when every human, from Adam (AS) to the last person born, will be brought back to life and held accountable for their deeds. The righteous will be rewarded with Jannah, while the wicked will face Jahannam.
Allah (SWT) reminds us of this certainty:
“And the Trumpet will be blown, and at once they will come forth from the graves to their Lord.”
(Surah Yasin 36:51)
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) also emphasized:
“Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day should speak good or remain silent.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 6018; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 47)
The belief in resurrection should motivate us to lead righteous lives, seek Allah’s mercy, and prepare for the Hereafter. May Allah (SWT) grant us success on that day and admit us into Jannah. Ameen.
