Small Signs of Qiyamah That Have Happened
The Spread of Immorality and Sin
One of the most noticeable signs of Qiyamah, which is already evident in our society, is the widespread prevalence of immorality, corruption, and sin. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) warned that the closer we get to Qiyamah, the more common it would become for people to engage in sinful behavior without shame or remorse.
Translation:
On the authority of Hudhayfah (RA), he said:
“There will come fitnah (trials) like pieces of dark night. In it, a person will wake up a believer and will go to bed a disbeliever, or vice versa. He who is sitting during these times is better than the one who is standing. And he who is standing is better than the one who is walking.”
This hadith illustrates how society would experience a time when moral corruption spreads like a dark night, and people would be confused about right and wrong, leading to widespread sin and disobedience to Allah (SWT).
In today’s world, we see the normalization of activities that were once considered sinful, such as adultery, dishonesty, and consumption of harmful substances like drugs and alcohol. Moreover, the exploitation of the vulnerable and the oppression of the weak have become rampant, signaling the approach of Qiyamah.

Disintegration of Family Structures
Another small sign of Qiyamah that has already been witnessed is the breakdown of family structures. The family unit, which holds great importance in Islam, is under increasing threat from a variety of modern societal factors. Divorce rates are soaring, and relationships between parents and children are deteriorating. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) foretold that families would become fragmented, and people would become more focused on their individual desires than on fulfilling their responsibilities to one another.
Translation:
Abu Hurairah (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“When the people are corrupt, the kingdom will be corrupt, and when the kingdom is corrupt, the souls will be corrupt.”
This hadith reflects how the decline of moral values in society affects all levels, including the family structure. Today, we witness a trend where familial ties are increasingly strained, with many individuals prioritizing personal ambitions over the well-being of their loved ones.
Increased Natural Disasters
The occurrence of frequent and intense natural disasters, such as earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, and wildfires, is another sign of Qiyamah that has been observed in recent times. These events, which often result in widespread destruction and loss of life, have become more common in the modern world.
Translation:
“When the earth is shaken with its final earthquake,
And the earth discharges its burdens,
And man says, ‘What is [wrong] with it?’
That Day, it will report its news
Because your Lord has commanded it.”
This verse from Surah Az-Zalzalah refers to the great earthquake that will occur at the time of Qiyamah. However, the frequent occurrence of smaller earthquakes and natural disasters in the present world may be seen as a foreshadowing of the greater, ultimate upheaval on the Day of Judgment.
The Prevalence of False Prophets and Misguidance
One of the signs of Qiyamah that has already been witnessed is the rise of false prophets and misguided individuals who claim to have divine knowledge or powers. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) warned that in the time leading up to Qiyamah, many would emerge, claiming to be the saviors or possessors of special guidance, leading many people astray.
Translation:
Abu Hurairah (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“You will find people in the last part of time, before the Day of Judgment, who will claim to be prophets. They will not be true prophets, but they will be the most knowledgeable among people in matters of falsehood.”
This warning is evident today, as many individuals around the world claim to have been chosen by God or to possess divine powers, leading people into error. In some cases, these self-proclaimed leaders establish cults or followings that reject the true teachings of Islam.
Widespread Use of Riba (Usury)
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) warned against the widespread use of riba (interest or usury) as a sign of the approach of Qiyamah. In the modern world, the global financial system is heavily reliant on riba, and it has become deeply ingrained in economic structures, despite its prohibition in Islam.
Translation:
Jabir (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) cursed the one who consumes riba, the one who gives it, the two witnesses, and the one who writes the contract.
The widespread practice of riba today is a clear indication of the moral and ethical decline that was foretold by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), and it signals the impending arrival of Qiyamah.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the small signs of Qiyamah that have already appeared in our world are undeniable reminders of the inevitable approach of the Day of Judgment. These signs, as foretold by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and outlined in the Quran, serve as a wake-up call for believers to reflect upon their actions and the state of the world around them.
Translation:
“And no new reminder comes to them from their Lord, but they listen to it while they play.”
(Surah Al-Anbiya, 21:2)
This verse highlights how, despite the clear signs of Allah’s commands and the reminders about the Day of Judgment, many people remain heedless and immersed in worldly distractions. The Prophet (ﷺ) warned of the consequences of ignoring such signs. He said:
Translation:
“Whoever does not prepare for the trials of time will face the consequences, as the fire will be his abode.”
These signs, such as the increase in sin, corruption, and immorality, as well as the breakdown of social structures, are present and worsening in the world. They remind us of the words of the Prophet (ﷺ), who said:
Translation:
“Time will become shorter, knowledge will be taken away, and ignorance will spread.”
As Muslims, we must heed these warnings and use them to strengthen our faith and commitment to Allah (SWT). The small signs of Qiyamah are not just to be observed but acted upon. We are reminded to turn back to Allah, live with sincerity, and prepare for the life that awaits us in the Hereafter. May Allah (SWT) guide us to act upon these reminders and grant us success on the Day of Judgment.
