“And We certainly sent into every nation a messenger, [saying], ‘Worship Allah and avoid Taghut.'”
(Surah An-Nahl, 16:36)
The First Pillar of Islam
The testimony of faith, La ilaha illa Allah (There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah), is the first pillar of Islam. It affirms Tawheed and serves as the gateway to entering the fold of Islam.

“مَن قالَ لا إلهَ إلا اللهُ، وَمَاتَ وَهو يُؤْمِنُ بذلك، دَخَلَ الجَنَّةَ.”
(صحيح البخاري، حديث 128)“Whoever says, ‘There is no god but Allah,’ and dies while believing in that, will enter Paradise.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 128)
The Foundation of All Worship
Acts of worship such as Salah (prayer), Zakah (charity), fasting, and Hajj (pilgrimage) are only valid when performed with the belief in Tawheed. Without it, these acts lose their essence.
Liberation from Falsehood and Oppression
Tawheed liberates individuals from servitude to other humans, idols, or false deities. It establishes the sovereignty of Allah as the ultimate authority, providing true freedom and dignity.

فَاعْلَمْ أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ
“So know, [O Muhammad], that there is no deity except Allah.”

الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَتَطْمَئِنُّ قُلُوبُهُم بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ ۗ أَلَا بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ
“Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allah. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allah hearts are assured.”
(Surah Ar-Ra’d, 13:28)
Forgiveness of Sins
Allah promises to forgive the sins of those who sincerely believe in Tawheed and turn to Him in repentance.
- Prophetic Tradition: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“يَقُولُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى: يَا ابْنَ آدَمَ، إِنَّكَ لَوْ أَتَيْتَنِي بِقُرَابِ الْأَرْضِ خَطَايَا، ثُمَّ لَقِيتَنِي لَا تُشْرِكُ بِي شَيْئًا لَأَتَيْتُكَ بِقُرَابِهَا مَغْفِرَةً.”
(سنن الترمذي، حديث 3540)“Allah says, ‘O son of Adam, if you come to Me with sins as large as the earth, but meet Me not associating anything with Me, I will forgive you as large as that.'”
(Sunan al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 3540)
Unity Among Muslims
Tawheed unites Muslims under one creed, transcending ethnic, racial, and linguistic differences. It fosters a sense of brotherhood and equality.
A Shield Against Shirk (Polytheism)
Tawheed protects a believer from falling into shirk, the act of associating partners with Allah, which is considered the gravest sin in Islam.
- Qur’anic Warning:
إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَغْفِرُ أَن يُشْرَكَ بِهِ وَيَغْفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ لِمَن يَشَاءُ
“Indeed, Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills.”
(Surah An-Nisa, 4:48)
The Consequences of Neglecting Tawheed
Neglecting Tawheed has dire consequences, both in this life and the Hereafter:
- Loss of Divine Support and Guidance Without Tawheed, individuals stray into misguidance and lose the blessings of Allah.
- Eternal Punishment Those who die without embracing Tawheed and persist in shirk are promised eternal punishment in the Hereafter.
- Qur’anic Evidence:
إِنَّهُۥ مَن يُشْرِكْ بِٱللَّهِ فَقَدْ حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ ٱلْجَنَّةَ وَمَأْوَىٰهُ ٱلنَّارُ
“Indeed, he who associates others with Allah – Allah has forbidden him Paradise, and his refuge is the Fire.”
(Surah Al-Ma’idah, 5:72)
Strengthening One’s Tawheed

- Qur’anic Encouragement:
أَفَلَا يَتَدَبَّرُونَ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ
“Do they not reflect upon the Qur’an?”

Avoiding All Forms of Shirk
A Muslim must be vigilant in avoiding major and minor shirk, such as swearing by other than Allah or showing off in acts of worship.

“أحبُّ الكلامِ إلى اللهِ: سبحانَ اللهِ، والحمدُ للهِ، ولا إلهَ إلا اللهُ، واللهُ أكبرُ.”
(صحيح مسلم، حديث 2137)“The most beloved words to Allah are: Subhan Allah, Alhamdulillah, La ilaha illa Allah, and Allahu Akbar.”
