The Spread of Riba as a Sign of Qiyamah
The concept of Riba (usury or interest) is a significant aspect of Islamic teachings, profoundly impacting the ethical and economic framework of society. The Quran and Hadith strongly prohibit Riba due to its unjust nature and its detrimental effects on individuals and society. The practice of Riba leads to exploitation, wealth concentration, and societal inequality, which are considered major sins in Islam. As the world moves towards more complex financial systems, the rise of Riba has become increasingly widespread, even in Muslim-majority countries, signaling a worrying trend.
The spread of Riba before the arrival of Qiyamah (the Day of Judgment) is a well-known sign of the end times, as described in both the Quran and Hadith. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) warned that Riba would become rampant and even those not directly involved would be affected by it:
(Sunan Abu Dawood)
“People will be involved in Riba to such an extent that even those who are not directly involved will be affected by it.”
The Quran also explicitly forbids Riba, stating:
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:130)
“O you who have believed, do not consume Riba, doubled and multiplied, but fear Allah that you may be successful.”
Thus, the spread of Riba is not only a moral and financial issue but also a significant sign of the impending end of times.
Riba: An Islamic Perspective
Riba, in its simplest form, refers to the unjust increase in loans or debts. It can take several forms, such as charging interest on loans or engaging in transactions where there is an unfair advantage for one party over another. The Quran is explicit in its condemnation of Riba, and it provides a clear distinction between lawful business transactions and those involving Riba.
The Prohibition of Riba in the Quran
Allah (SWT) explicitly forbids Riba in the Quran. One of the most direct verses condemning Riba is found in Surah Al-Baqarah:
Translation:
“O you who have believed, do not consume Riba, doubled and multiplied, but fear Allah that you may be successful.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:130)
In this verse, Allah commands the believers to avoid engaging in Riba and warns them of its harmful consequences. The prohibition is strict, and it is considered a major sin in Islam. The use of terms like “doubled and multiplied” indicates that the practice of Riba leads to unjust financial practices that harm the poor and vulnerable.
Another clear prohibition of Riba is found in Surah Al-Imran:
Translation:
“O you who have believed, do not consume Riba, multiplied and increased, but fear Allah that you may be successful.”
(Surah Al-Imran 3:130)
This verse again emphasizes the prohibition of Riba and highlights the importance of fearing Allah. It also stresses that engaging in Riba is incompatible with true faith.
The Consequences of Engaging in Riba
The Quran provides a grave warning for those who engage in Riba. Allah (SWT) says:
Translation:
“Those who consume Riba will not stand except as stand one whom the Devil has driven to madness by [his] touch.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:275)
This verse presents a vivid image of the consequences of Riba, describing its practitioners as people affected by a demonic force, devoid of clarity and righteousness. The emotional and psychological toll of engaging in such a sinful practice is likened to madness and spiritual corruption.
Allah (SWT) warns that those who engage in Riba and fail to repent will face severe punishment on the Day of Judgment:
Translation:
“And if they do not repent, they will face a severe punishment from Allah.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:276)
Thus, the Quran makes it clear that those who engage in Riba are committing a grave sin, and without repentance, they will face dire consequences in the Hereafter.

Hadiths About the Spread of Riba as a Sign of Qiyamah
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) warned of the spread of Riba as one of the signs leading up to the Day of Judgment. The following Hadiths illustrate the Prophet’s (ﷺ) teachings on Riba and its connection to the end times.
The Proliferation of Riba in Society
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) warned that Riba would be so widespread before the end times that even those who did not directly engage in it would be affected by it:
Translation:
“People will be involved in Riba to such an extent that even those who are not directly involved will be affected by it.”
(Narrated by Abu Dawood)
This Hadith indicates that the spread of Riba will affect the entire society, not just those who directly engage in usurious transactions. The financial system, driven by Riba, will become so entrenched that its harmful consequences will be felt by everyone.
The Severe Punishment for Engaging in Riba
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) highlighted the severe consequences for those who engage in Riba:
Translation:
“Avoid the seven destructive sins.” They asked, “O Messenger of Allah, what are they?” He said, “Associating partners with Allah, sorcery, killing a soul which Allah has made sacred except by right, and consuming Riba.”
(Narrated by Al-Bukhari)
In this Hadith, the Prophet (ﷺ) lists Riba among the seven most destructive sins that lead to the loss of faith and severe punishment. The comparison to sins like shirk (associating partners with Allah) and murder emphasizes the gravity of Riba in the eyes of Allah.
The Universal Spread of Riba in the End Times
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) also warned that Riba would spread extensively as the end times approached:
Translation:
“The usury of wealth in the later times will be more severe than in the earlier times.”
(Narrated by Muslim)
This Hadith underscores the idea that as Qiyamah approaches, the practice of Riba will increase and become even more destructive, far surpassing the negative impact it had in the past.
The Consequences of the Spread of Riba
Social and Economic Injustice
The spread of Riba creates an environment of social and economic injustice. It leads to the concentration of wealth in the hands of a few, leaving the majority of people in poverty. This creates a deep inequality in society. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:
Translation:
“The usury of wealth destroys its blessings, corrupts the land, and harms the soul.”
(Narrated by Ibn Majah)
Riba takes away the blessings of wealth and leads to moral and spiritual corruption. Those who engage in Riba accumulate wealth unjustly, causing harm to society as a whole. The rich get richer, while the poor become trapped in cycles of debt and poverty.
The Corruption of the Economic System
Riba is often seen as a cornerstone of modern financial systems. It creates a system where wealth is concentrated in the hands of a few financial institutions, which charge interest on loans. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) spoke about the corruption of such systems:
Translation:
“The spread of Riba in the later times will lead to financial crises and the corruption of trade.”
(Narrated by At-Tirmidhi)
This Hadith illustrates the long-term consequences of allowing Riba to dominate financial systems. The unchecked spread of usury will eventually lead to financial instability and the collapse of economic systems.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the spread of Riba (usury) before the Day of Judgment is a clear and significant sign of the approach of Qiyamah, as outlined in both the Quran and Hadith. Riba, an unjust financial practice, is prohibited in Islam because it creates economic disparities, harms society, and leads individuals away from the path of righteousness. The Quran sternly warns against Riba, calling it a major sin with severe consequences for those who engage in it:
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:130)
“O you who have believed, do not consume Riba, doubled and multiplied, but fear Allah that you may be successful.”
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) also warned that the spread of Riba would become widespread and increasingly severe as the end times approach:
(Sahih Muslim)
“The usury of wealth in the later times will be more severe than in the earlier times.”
These teachings emphasize that the prevalence of Riba signifies moral decay and social injustice, further pointing to the nearing of Qiyamah. As Muslims, it is crucial to avoid Riba, promote fairness, and encourage ethical financial practices to ensure a just society. May Allah guide us to uphold His commands and protect us from the harms of Riba. Ameen.
