The Three Major Landslides Before Qiyamah

The Three Major Landslides Before Qiyamah: A Detailed Analysis

As we approach the end of times, the signs of Qiyamah (the Day of Judgment) become increasingly apparent. The Quran and Hadith provide various descriptions of these signs, some of which are major and others minor. Among the major signs, the occurrence of three significant landslides or earthquakes stands out. These catastrophic events are harbingers of the impending end of the world and are of great importance in Islamic eschatology.

The three major landslides will take place in specific regions, and they signify a dramatic shift in the natural order, foreshadowing the onset of the Day of Judgment. Their occurrence will serve as a wake-up call for humanity, urging us to return to Allah and prepare for the inevitable reality of the Hereafter. In this article, we will explore the concept of the three landslides, their significance in the Quran and Hadith, and how we can understand and prepare for these events.

The Quranic and Hadith Descriptions of the Major Landslides

The concept of landslides or massive earthquakes before Qiyamah is mentioned in both the Quran and Hadith, emphasizing their significance in the final moments of the world. In the Quran, Allah describes certain natural disasters as a sign of His power and a warning to humanity.

In Surah At-Takwir, Allah says:

“إِذَا السَّمَاءُ فَارَتْ وَإِذَا الْجِبَالُ سَارَتْ”
(Surah At-Takwir 81:3)
“When the sky has split open and when the mountains have been made to move.”

This verse metaphorically alludes to the catastrophic natural events, including landslides and earthquakes, that will occur during the approach of Qiyamah. The disruption of the natural order, such as mountains crumbling or the earth shaking violently, is a clear indication of the impending Day of Judgment.

Furthermore, Allah describes the end of the world in Surah Al-Zalzalah:

“إِذَا زُلْزِلَتِ الْأَرْضُ زِلْزَالَهَا وَأَخْرَجَتِ الْأَرْضُ أَثْقَالَهَا وَقَالَ الْإِنسَانُ مَا لَهَا”
(Surah Al-Zalzalah 99:1-3)
“When the earth is shaken with its [final] earthquake and the earth discharges its burdens, and man says, ‘What is [wrong] with it?'”

This verse refers to the great earthquake that will occur on the Day of Judgment. However, it can also be interpreted as referring to the major earthquakes or landslides that will take place before Qiyamah, serving as warnings of the approaching end.

The Three Major Landslides Before Qiyamah

The First Major Landslide: The Landslide in the East

One of the first significant landslides before Qiyamah will occur in the East. This landslide will be so immense that it will cause widespread devastation. Although the exact location is not mentioned in the Quran or Hadith, scholars have interpreted this to refer to a massive earthquake or landslide in the eastern part of the world, possibly in the region of the Arabian Peninsula, Asia, or the areas surrounding it.

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:

“يُوشِكُ أَنْ تَكُونَ فِتْنَةٌ تَقْتُلُ فِيهَا لَمْحٌ وَمَنْ نَاجَ فِيهَا يَرَى فِيهَا السُّوقَ”
(Sahih Muslim 2864)
“A fitnah (trial) will soon arise in which the one who tries to escape will be caught, and those who survive it will witness the marketplace.”

This Hadith refers to a tumultuous period when a significant natural disaster, such as a landslide or earthquake, will strike the eastern lands. The destruction will be overwhelming, and humanity will be left in a state of confusion and helplessness. It is believed that this landslide will set the stage for even greater signs to follow.

The Second Major Landslide: The Landslide in the West

The second major landslide will occur in the West, possibly affecting the region surrounding the Mediterranean. This event will also be devastating, with catastrophic effects on the landscape and human civilization. The Hadiths mention that the landslide in the West will be a warning to the people living in those regions, encouraging them to turn back to Allah and repent for their sins.

In a famous narration, the Prophet (ﷺ) warned of the signs that will lead to Qiyamah:

“لَا تَقُومُ السَّاعَةُ حَتَّى يَكُونَ فِيهَا زَلَازِلُ”
(Sahih Muslim 158)
“The Hour will not come until there are earthquakes.”

This hadith is often interpreted as referring to the widespread earthquakes that will take place, including the landslide in the West. The earthquake will be one of the many signs that mark the onset of Qiyamah, and it will cause the people to realize the severity of the situation.

The Third Major Landslide: The Landslide in the Arabian Peninsula

The third major landslide will occur in the Arabian Peninsula, and it is specifically mentioned in the Hadith. This event is said to be so powerful that it will completely alter the geography of the region.

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:

“وَيَنْفَجِرُ مِّنْهَا سَجِيلٌ كَمَا فَعَلَ فِي أَيَّامِ ذِي القَرْنَيْنِ”
(Sahih Bukhari 3220)
“And from it, a river will flow like it did during the time of Dhul-Qarnayn.”

This Hadith alludes to the landslide in the Arabian Peninsula, which will cause rivers to flow and shake the land in a manner previously unseen. The intense shaking will be a final warning for the people of the region to repent and return to righteousness.

Additionally, it is believed that this landslide will serve as the final wake-up call for humanity, signaling the imminent arrival of the Day of Judgment. The signs are clear: the earth will be shaken, and only those who have prepared themselves for the Hereafter will find peace.

The Significance of These Landslides in Islamic Eschatology

The three major landslides or earthquakes are significant in Islamic eschatology because they serve as clear indicators that the world as we know it is coming to an end. Each of these landslides will have profound effects on the Earth’s surface, causing widespread destruction and reshaping the geography of the regions affected.

These landslides are meant to be a wake-up call for humanity, urging us to reflect on our lives and prepare for the Hereafter. They remind us of the transient nature of this world and the certainty of the Day of Judgment. As Muslims, it is our duty to remain conscious of these signs and take heed, repenting for our sins and increasing our worship of Allah.

The Connection Between the Landslides and Other Major Signs of Qiyamah

The three major landslides are just one aspect of the many signs of Qiyamah that will unfold in the lead-up to the final day. Other significant events, such as the emergence of the Dajjal (Antichrist), the appearance of the Mahdi, and the return of Prophet Isa (Jesus, عليه السلام), will all take place before the final blowing of the trumpet.

In a hadith narrated by Abu Huraira (رضي الله عنه), the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:

“يَحْشُرُ النَّاسُ يَوْمَ القِيَامَةِ عَلَىٰ صُورَةٍ إِحْدَىٰ”
(Sahih Muslim 168)
“On the Day of Judgment, the people will be gathered in a state that they have never been in before.”

This statement emphasizes that the landslides and other signs will be part of the transformation of the world that will lead to the Day of Judgment, where all people will be resurrected and gathered for their final reckoning.

Conclusion

The three major landslides before Qiyamah, as described in both the Quran and Hadith, are a vivid reminder of the transitory nature of this world and the imminent reality of the Hereafter. These powerful natural disasters, which will strike the East, the West, and the Arabian Peninsula, serve as harbingers of the final days. They emphasize the supreme power of Allah and serve as a clear sign that the Day of Judgment is fast approaching.

In the Quran, Allah tells us:

“إِذَا زُلْزِلَتِ الْأَرْضُ زِلْزَالَهَا وَأَخْرَجَتِ الْأَرْضُ أَثْقَالَهَا وَقَالَ الْإِنسَانُ مَا لَهَا”
(Surah Al-Zalzalah 99:1-3)
“When the earth is shaken with its [final] earthquake and the earth discharges its burdens, and man says, ‘What is [wrong] with it?'”

This verse reflects the magnitude of the earth’s shaking and its disarray, a scene that will unfold during the major landslides as one of the signs before Qiyamah.

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) further emphasizes this in a Hadith:

“لا تقوم الساعة حتى تحدث زلازل، ويكثر القتل، ويكثر المال، وتظهر الفتن”
(Sahih Muslim 158)
“The Hour will not come until there are earthquakes, killing increases, wealth abounds, and trials appear.”

These landslides will be accompanied by immense trials and signs, compelling us to turn towards repentance and faith in Allah. As Muslims, we are called to prepare for these events by living righteous lives, staying mindful of the fleeting nature of this world, and remembering the certainty of the Hereafter. The landslides are a powerful reminder that only through faith and good deeds can we hope to face the inevitable Day of Judgment with peace and success.
