What Happens When the Trumpet is Blown?

The blowing of the Trumpet (As-Sur) is one of the most significant events in Islamic eschatology, marking the end of this world and the beginning of the Day of Judgment (Qiyamah). This moment will bring unimaginable chaos, shaking the very foundations of the universe, causing all life to perish before the resurrection of all human beings. The Quran and Hadith describe this event in great detail, emphasizing its fearsome and inevitable nature.

The Trumpet will be blown by Angel Israfil (AS) at the command of Allah (SWT). Islamic teachings mention two major blows:

  1. The First Blow (نفخة الفزع) – which will cause the destruction of everything.
  2. The Second Blow (نفخة البعث) – which will resurrect all beings for judgment.

Allah (SWT) warns in the Quran:

“And the Trumpet will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and the earth will fall dead, except whom Allah wills.”
(Surah Az-Zumar 39:68)

This blog will explore what happens when the Trumpet is blown, using Quranic and Hadith references to highlight the magnitude of this event and its impact on humanity.

The Blower of the Trumpet: Angel Israfil (AS)

The Trumpet (As-Sur) will be blown by Angel Israfil (AS), one of the four great angels in Islam. While the Quran does not mention his name explicitly, the Hadith literature confirms that he is the one assigned to this monumental task.

Hadith on Angel Israfil (AS) and the Trumpet

Translation:
Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said:
“How can I feel at ease when the one with the Trumpet (Israfil) has placed it to his lips, bent his forehead, and is waiting for the command to blow it?”
(Sunan At-Tirmidhi, Hadith 2431)

This Hadith shows that Angel Israfil (AS) has already prepared himself, awaiting Allah’s command to initiate the end of the world.

What Happens When the Trumpet is Blown

The First Blowing of the Trumpet: The Destruction of the Universe

The first blowing of the Trumpet will bring absolute destruction. The heavens and the earth will be shaken, mountains will crumble, and every living being will die.

Quranic Verses on the First Blow of the Trumpet

The Universe Will Collapse

Translation:
“Then when the Trumpet is blown with a single blow, and the earth and mountains are lifted and crushed with a single blow, then on that Day, the Resurrection will occur.”
(Surah Al-Haqqah 69:13-15)

This verse describes the sudden and overwhelming impact of the first blowing of the Trumpet. The mountains will be lifted and smashed into dust, and all of creation will be destroyed.

Everything Will Perish

Translation:
“And the Trumpet will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth will fall dead, except whom Allah wills.”
(Surah Az-Zumar 39:68)

This Quranic verse confirms that everything will be destroyed, except those whom Allah wills to remain alive (such as Angel Jibril, Angel Mikail, Angel Israfil, and the Angel of Death).

Hadith on the First Blowing of the Trumpet

Translation:
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:
“Between the two blows of the Trumpet, there will be a gap of forty (years, months, or days—Allah knows best).”
(Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2955)

This means that after the first blowing, there will be a period of time before the second blowing occurs, allowing for the preparation of resurrection.

The Second Blowing of the Trumpet: Resurrection and Judgment

After everything has perished, the second blowing of the Trumpet will signal the beginning of resurrection. This is when all human beings will be brought back to life and gathered for judgment.

Quranic Verses on the Second Blow of the Trumpet

Resurrection of the Dead

Translation:
“Then it will be blown again, and at once they will be standing, looking on.”
(Surah Az-Zumar 39:68)

This verse confirms that all humans will be resurrected after the second blowing of the Trumpet, standing before Allah, awaiting judgment.

People Will Rise from Their Graves

Translation:
“And the Trumpet will be blown, and at once they will rush from their graves to their Lord.”
(Surah Yasin 36:51)

This Quranic verse describes the fear and urgency with which people will emerge from their graves, rushing towards the place of judgment.

The Impact on Humanity on the Day of Judgment

After resurrection, all people will be gathered for reckoning. The consequences of our deeds will determine our final destination—either Paradise (Jannah) or Hell (Jahannam).

Hadith on the Fear of That Day

Translation:
Aisha (RA) asked the Prophet (PBUH): “Will a man remember his family on the Day of Judgment?”
The Prophet (PBUH) replied: “O Aisha, in three moments, he will not remember them: at the weighing of deeds, when receiving the record of deeds, and when crossing the Sirat (bridge over Hell).”
(Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 25565)

This Hadith shows how terrifying the Day of Judgment will be, as each person will be deeply concerned with their own fate.

Conclusion

The blowing of the Trumpet is one of the most cataclysmic and terrifying events in the history of creation. It marks the end of the world, the destruction of everything in existence, and the beginning of the Day of Judgment. The Quran and Hadith provide vivid descriptions of this moment, emphasizing the fear, chaos, and accountability that will follow.

With the first blow, the entire universe will collapse, and all living beings will perish. Then, after a period known only to Allah (SWT), the Trumpet will be blown again, and all human beings will be resurrected for reckoning. On that momentous day, each soul will stand before Allah, facing the consequences of their deeds.

Allah (SWT) warns us in the Quran:

“And the Trumpet will be blown, and at once they will rush from their graves to their Lord.”
(Surah Yasin 36:51)

This powerful event reminds us to repent and prepare for the Hereafter before it is too late. May Allah (SWT) guide us and grant us success on the Day of Judgment. Ameen.
