The Importance of Dawah (Spreading Islam)

Da’wah, which means “invitation” in Arabic, is a fundamental aspect of Islam, representing the act of inviting others to the truth of Islam and guiding them towards a righteous life. It is not merely the responsibility of scholars or religious leaders but a duty for every Muslim, as it plays a central role in spreading the message of Islam to the world. The Qur’an emphasizes the duty of inviting others to Allah’s path with wisdom, kindness, and patience. In Surah An-Nahl (16:125), Allah commands:

“ادْعُ إِلَىٰ سَبِيلِ رَبِّكَ بِالْحِكْمَةِ وَالْمَوْعِظَةِ الْحَسَنَةِ وَجَادِلْهُم بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ…”
“Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best.”

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) also stressed the importance of Da’wah, stating:
“من دلَّ على خيرٍ فله مثلُ أجرِ فاعله”
“Whoever guides someone to a good deed will receive a reward similar to the one who performs it.” (Sahih Muslim)

This highlights that Da’wah is a means of earning great rewards, both for those who invite others and for those who accept the invitation.

  “ادْعُ إِلَىٰ سَبِيلِ رَبِّكَ بِالْحِكْمَةِ وَالْمَوْعِظَةِ الْحَسَنَةِ وَجَادِلْهُم بِالَّتِي هِيَ أَحْسَنُ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِمَن ضَلَّ عَنْ سَبِيلِهِ وَهُوَ أَعْلَمُ بِالْمُهْتَدِينَ”

  “Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best. Indeed, your Lord is most knowing of who has strayed from His way and He is most knowing of who is guided.”

This verse highlights the essence of Dawah — to call others to the path of Allah with wisdom, good advice, and beautiful manners. It emphasizes that Dawah should be done with gentleness, and that the way of Allah should be shared with patience and respect. Importantly, the verse reminds us that it is Allah who guides, and it is not the individual’s responsibility to force anyone into belief. The role of the Muslim is simply to invite others with sincerity, leaving the outcome in the hands of Allah.

Dawah as a Call to Fulfill a Purpose

Allah also reveals in the Qur’an the higher purpose of Dawah — it is not just a duty, but a means of fulfilling the purpose of life, which is to worship Allah alone and to spread peace and righteousness.

• Surah Al-Baqarah (2:143):

  “وَكَذَٰلِكَ جَعَلْنَاكُمْ أُمَّةً وَسَطًا لِّيَكُونُوا۟ شُهَدَاءَ عَلَى النَّاسِ وَيَكُونَ الرَّسُولُ عَلَيْكُمْ شَهِيدًا…”

  “And thus we have made you a just (middle) nation that you will be witnesses over the people and the Messenger will be a witness over you…”

In this verse, Allah refers to the Muslim Ummah (community) as a “middle” nation that will stand as witnesses to the truth and testify on behalf of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The core of this testimony lies in the message of Islam — the belief in the oneness of Allah and the call to righteousness. Therefore, through Dawah, Muslims become the bearers of this testimony, fulfilling their divine role.

The Role of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in Dawah

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the best example of Dawah.   “Call to the path of your Lord until the dawn of your destiny…”

This Hadith demonstrates the importance of continuous, patient Dawah. It highlights that Dawah is not limited to a particular time or group of people but should continue for as long as one has the opportunity. The Prophet’s example shows that Dawah should be pursued as an ongoing effort to spread knowledge and understanding of Islam.

• Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 335:

  “لَا تَحْسَبُوا۟ الَّذِينَ قُتِلُوا۟ فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ أَمْوَاتًا بَلْ أَحْيَا۟ءٌۢ عِندَ رَبِّهِمْ يُرْزَقُونَ”

  “Do not think of those who have been killed in the cause of Allah as dead; rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision.”

This Hadith not only demonstrates the reward of perseverance in the cause of Allah but also reflects the true essence of Dawah — that the efforts of a believer are never in vain. Even when people may not immediately accept the message of Islam, their rewards are assured with Allah if their intentions are pure and sincere.

Dawah as a Source of Reward

For the one who engages in Dawah, the rewards are immense. Allah promises great rewards to those who invite others to the truth and help them find their way to Islam.

Reward for the One Who Guides Others

In numerous Hadiths, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) emphasized the tremendous reward for those who lead others to Islam and guide them on the right path.

• Sahih Muslim, Book 4, Hadith 1578:

  “من دلَّ على خيرٍ فله مثلُ أجرِ فاعله”

  “Whoever guides someone to a good deed will receive a reward similar to the one who performs it.”

This Hadith shows that the act of guiding others to righteousness is highly rewarded by Allah. The one who invites others to Islam or assists them in understanding the teachings of the religion will earn a reward equal to that of the person who accepts the guidance and follows the path of righteousness.

In a world that is often divided by conflict and misunderstanding, Dawah has the potential to bring people together by inviting them to embrace peace, justice, and mutual respect. • Surah Al-Mumtahina (60:8):

  “لَا يَنْهَاكُمُ اللَّهُ عَنِ الَّذِينَ لَمْ يُقَاتِلُوكُمْ فِي الدِّينِ وَلَمْ يُخْرِجُوكُمْ مِنْ دِيَارِكُمْ أَنْ تَبَرُّوهُمْ وَتُقْسِطُوا۟ إِلَيْهِمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُقْسِطِينَ”

  “Allah does not forbid you from those who do not fight you because of religion and do not expel you from your homes from being righteous toward them and acting justly toward them. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.”

This verse reflects the universal message of Islam, emphasizing the importance of justice and compassion toward all people, even those who are not Muslim. Dawah, therefore, serves not only to spread Islam but also to establish a foundation of justice and fairness in society.
