The Coming of Imam Mahdi Before Qiyamah: A Detailed Exploration

In Islamic eschatology, the arrival of Imam Mahdi (عليه السلام) before the Day of Judgment (Qiyamah) is one of the most significant events. He is a divinely guided leader who will emerge in the last days to restore justice, peace, and righteousness to the world. The coming of Imam Mahdi is a major sign of the approaching end of times, and it is mentioned in numerous hadiths narrated by the Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم), as well as in various Islamic scholarly traditions.

Imam Mahdi’s emergence is seen as a necessary precursor to the defeat of evil, especially the false messiah, Dajjal (the Antichrist), and the establishment of a righteous society. While his arrival is not explicitly mentioned in the Quran, there are several signs in Islamic texts that point to his coming. These signs emphasize the role of Imam Mahdi in bringing about the triumph of truth, justice, and the eventual establishment of the Kingdom of Allah on Earth.

In this detailed blog post, we will explore the concept of Imam Mahdi in Islam, drawing on both Quranic verses and hadiths in their original Arabic form with English translations. We will discuss his background, the signs of his arrival, his mission, and how his coming will impact the world before the Day of Qiyamah.

Who is Imam Mahdi?

Imam Mahdi is a figure who is believed to be a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), specifically from his daughter, Fatimah (RA). He will be a righteous leader who will emerge at a time when the world is in chaos, full of oppression, injustice, and turmoil. His arrival will signify the end of corruption and the restoration of justice according to Islamic principles.

Imam Mahdi’s title, “Mahdi,” comes from the Arabic root “h-d-y,” meaning “to guide” or “the guided one.” He is known as “the one who is divinely guided” to lead the Muslims and all of humanity back to the correct path. Imam Mahdi will rule with justice, compassion, and righteousness, and his rule will be marked by prosperity and peace before the coming of the final signs of the Day of Judgment.

Quranic Allusions to the Coming of Imam Mahdi

Although Imam Mahdi is not mentioned directly by name in the Quran, Islamic scholars have interpreted certain verses as referring to his coming. These verses highlight the divine intervention and the eventual triumph of the righteous.

Surah Al-Fath (48:29)

Translation:
“Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; and those with him are forceful against the disbelievers, merciful among themselves. You see them bowing and prostrating in prayer, seeking Allah’s bounty and His pleasure.

Their mark is on their faces from the trace of prostration. That is their description in the Torah; and their description in the Gospel is like a plant which produces its shoot, then strengthens it so it becomes thick and stands upon its stalk, delighting the sowers.”

This verse refers to the qualities of the companions of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), but scholars also interpret it as an allusion to Imam Mahdi’s followers. Imam Mahdi’s army will be distinguished by their piety, commitment to Allah, and righteousness, just like the companions of the Prophet. This verse is viewed as an indication of the eventual triumph of the followers of truth under the leadership of Imam Mahdi.

Surah As-Saff (61:9)

Translation:
“It is He who has sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religion. And sufficient is Allah as a Witness.”

This verse is often understood as a prophecy of the ultimate victory of Islam, which will be achieved through the coming of Imam Mahdi. His leadership will fulfill the promise of Islam dominating all religions, as the truth of Allah will be manifest in the world under his guidance.
