How to Perform Sunnah Prayers
How to Perform Sunnah Prayers: A Comprehensive Guide
Sunnah prayers (صلاة السنة) are voluntary acts of worship that the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) regularly performed and recommended. They complement the obligatory (Fard) prayers and bring immense spiritual benefits, such as drawing closer to Allah (SWT), earning rewards, and expiating minor sins.
Performing Sunnah prayers demonstrates a Muslim’s commitment to following the Sunnah (tradition) of the Prophet (ﷺ), as emphasized in the Qur’an and Hadith.
This detailed guide explores the types of Sunnah prayers, their virtues, and how to perform them, with references from the Qur’an and authentic Hadith in both Arabic and English.
The Importance of Sunnah Prayers
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) emphasized the significance of Sunnah prayers as a way to gain Allah’s love and mercy. Allah (SWT) says in the Qur’an:
قُلْ إِن كُنتُمْ تُحِبُّونَ ٱللَّهَ فَٱتَّبِعُونِى يُحْبِبْكُمُ ٱللَّهُ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ذُنُوبَكُمْۗ وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ
“Say, [O Muhammad], ‘If you should love Allah, then follow me, so Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.'”
(Surah Aal-E-Imran 3:31)
In a Hadith Qudsi, Allah (SWT) says:
وَمَا تَقَرَّبَ إِلَيَّ عَبْدِي بِشَيْءٍ أَحَبَّ إِلَيَّ مِمَّا افْتَرَضْتُ عَلَيْهِ، وَلَا يَزَالُ عَبْدِي يَتَقَرَّبُ إِلَيَّ بِالنَّوَافِلِ حَتَّى أُحِبَّهُ…
“My servant does not draw near to Me with anything more beloved to Me than what I have made obligatory upon him, and My servant continues to draw near to Me with voluntary deeds until I love him…”
(Sahih al-Bukhari: 6502)
Types of Sunnah Prayers
Sunnah prayers are voluntary acts of worship performed by Muslims to follow the practice of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ).
These prayers enhance the quality of a Muslim’s faith and bring them closer to Allah. Sunnah prayers are broadly categorized into Sunnah Mu’akkadah (emphasized) and Sunnah Ghair Mu’akkadah (non-emphasized).
1. Sunnah Mu’akkadah (Emphasized Sunnah)
These are highly encouraged prayers that the Prophet (ﷺ) consistently performed. Examples include:
- Sunnah before and after obligatory prayers:
- Two rak’ahs before Fajr: The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
رَكْعَتَا الْفَجْرِ خَيْرٌ مِّنَ الدُّنْيَا وَمَا فِيهَا
“The two rak’ahs before Fajr are better than the world and all it contains.”
(Sahih Muslim: 725)
-
- Four rak’ahs before Dhuhr and two after, two after Maghrib, and two after Isha.
2. Sunnah Ghair Mu’akkadah (Non-Emphasized Sunnah)
These are optional prayers performed occasionally by the Prophet (ﷺ). Examples include:
- Four rak’ahs before Asr and two rak’ahs before Maghrib or Isha.
3. Other Voluntary Prayers
- Tahajjud (Night Prayer): Performed after Isha and before Fajr.
- Duha (Forenoon Prayer): Performed after sunrise until before Dhuhr.
Performing these prayers earns immense reward, strengthens devotion, and complements obligatory acts of worship.
The Rawatib (Regular Sunnah Prayers)
The Rawatib are Sunnah prayers associated with the obligatory prayers. These include specific prayers before and after the five daily Fard prayers. The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“There is no Muslim servant who prays twelve units of prayer for Allah every day, apart from the obligatory prayers, but Allah will build for him a house in Paradise.”
(Sahih Muslim: 728)
The breakdown of the Rawatib is as follows:
Prayer | Rak‘ahs Before | Rak‘ahs After | Total |
---|---|---|---|
Fajr | 2 | 0 | 2 |
Dhuhr | 4 | 2 | 6 |
Asr | 0 | 0 | 0 |
Maghrib | 0 | 2 | 2 |
Isha | 0 | 2 | 2 |
How to Perform:
- Two Rak‘ahs Before Fajr (Sunnah of Fajr):
The Prophet (ﷺ) said:رَكْعَتَا ٱلْفَجْرِ خَيْرٌ مِنَ ٱلدُّنْيَا وَمَا فِيهَا
“The two rak‘ahs before Fajr are better than this world and all it contains.”
(Sahih Muslim: 725)
Perform these with serenity and recite Surah Al-Kafirun (Surah 109) in the first rak‘ah and Surah Al-Ikhlas (Surah 112) in the second rak‘ah, though it is not obligatory.
- Four Rak‘ahs Before and Two After Dhuhr:
These can be performed in sets of two rak‘ahs each.
“Whoever prays four [rak‘ahs] before Dhuhr and four after it, Allah will forbid him from the Fire.”
(Sunan al-Tirmidhi: 428) - Two Rak‘ahs After Maghrib and Isha:
These are short and straightforward prayers performed after the obligatory rak‘ahs.
Tahajjud (The Night Prayer)
Tahajjud is a highly virtuous Sunnah prayer performed after waking up from sleep in the latter part of the night. Allah (SWT) praises those who pray Tahajjud:
وَمِنَ ٱلَّيْلِ فَتَهَجَّدْ بِهِۦ نَافِلَةًۭ لَّكَ ۖ عَسَىٰٓ أَن يَبْعَثَكَ رَبُّكَ مَقَامًۭا مَّحْمُودًۭا
“And from [part of] the night, pray with it as additional [worship] for you; it is expected that your Lord will resurrect you to a praised station.”
(Surah Al-Isra 17:79)
How to Perform:
- Perform in sets of two rak‘ahs.
- Conclude with Witr prayer (odd rak‘ahs, typically one or three).
- Recite long portions of the Qur’an and engage in lengthy prostrations.
The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“The best prayer after the obligatory prayers is the night prayer.”
(Sahih Muslim: 1163)
Salat al-Duha (The Forenoon Prayer)
Salat al-Duha is performed after the sun rises to the height of a spear and before Dhuhr. It is a source of immense blessings. The Prophet (ﷺ) said:
“In the morning, every joint of one of you must pay a charity… and two rak‘ahs offered in the forenoon suffice for that.”
(Sahih Muslim: 720)
How to Perform:
- Pray a minimum of two rak‘ahs, but it can go up to eight.
- Recite any Surahs of your choice.
Witr (The Odd-Numbered Prayer)
Witr is performed after Isha and before Fajr. It is a Sunnah Mu’akkadah and highly recommended by the Prophet (ﷺ):
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ وِتْرٌ يُحِبُّ ٱلْوِتْرَ…
“Allah is One (Odd) and loves odd [numbers]…”
(Sahih Muslim: 2677)
How to Perform:
- Pray one rak‘ah or three rak‘ahs (recommended) with special supplications, such as the Qunoot in the final rak‘ah.
Salat al-Istikhara (The Prayer of Guidance)
When seeking Allah’s guidance in decision-making, the Prophet (ﷺ) taught a specific prayer known as Salat al-Istikhara:
إِذَا هَمَّ أَحَدُكُمْ بِٱلْأَمْرِ، فَلْيَرْكَعْ رَكْعَتَيْنِ مِنْ غَيْرِ ٱلْفَرِيضَةِ، ثُمَّ لِيَقُلْ…
“When one of you is deliberating over an issue, he should pray two non-obligatory rak‘ahs and then say…”
(Sahih al-Bukhari: 1166)
Virtues of Sunnah Prayers
- Completion of Deficiencies in Obligatory Prayers:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said:إِنَّ أَوَّلَ مَا يُحَاسَبُ بِهِ ٱلْعَبْدُ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَامَةِ ٱلصَّلَاةُ، فَإِنْ صَلَحَتْ صَلَحَ سَائِرُ عَمَلِهِ…
“The first thing a servant will be brought to account for on the Day of Resurrection is his prayer. If it is sound, the rest of his deeds will be sound…”
(Sunan al-Tirmidhi: 413) - Proximity to the Prophet (ﷺ):
The Prophet (ﷺ) said:عَلَيْكَ بِكَثْرَةِ ٱلسُّجُودِ لِلَّهِ…
“Prostrate frequently, for every prostration you make to Allah will raise you in status and erase your sins.”
(Sahih Muslim: 488)
Conclusion
Performing Sunnah prayers is an essential part of a Muslim’s worship, providing an opportunity to earn extra reward and draw closer to Allah (SWT).
These voluntary prayers, practiced by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), complement the obligatory prayers (Fard) and offer a means of refining one’s faith and discipline. Sunnah prayers vary in terms of their emphasis, with some being highly recommended (Sunnah Mu’akkadah) while others are less emphasized (Sunnah Ghair Mu’akkadah).
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) himself said:
“أَحَبُّ الأعمالِ إلى اللهِ أدومُها وإنْ قلَّ”
“The most beloved of deeds to Allah are those that are done regularly, even if they are few.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari: 6465)
This hadith highlights the importance of consistency in performing Sunnah prayers, regardless of the number of rak’ahs.
Through regular performance, a Muslim can attain greater closeness to Allah and receive blessings. The two rak’ahs before Fajr are particularly emphasized, as the Prophet (ﷺ) stated:
“رَكْعَتَا الْفَجْرِ خَيْرٌ مِّنَ الدُّنْيَا وَمَا فِيهَا”
“The two rak’ahs of Fajr are better than the world and everything in it.”
(Sahih Muslim: 725)
Sunnah prayers are a means of perfecting one’s worship, increasing faith, and seeking forgiveness and tranquility.
By incorporating these voluntary prayers into daily life, Muslims not only emulate the Prophet (ﷺ) but also pave the way for spiritual growth and success in both this world and the Hereafter.
