Morning Routine Inspired by Muhammad (ﷺ)

The morning holds immense significance in Islam, offering a fresh start to align our actions with faith and purpose. The Prophet Muhammad SM exemplified a morning routine that combined spirituality, mindfulness, and productivity, providing a model for Muslims to emulate. His practices were not only deeply rooted in devotion but also balanced with self-care and kindness, making his routine a timeless guide for all aspects of life.

The Qur’an emphasizes the importance of utilizing the early hours effectively:

فَإِذَا فَرَغْتَ فَٱنصَبْۖ وَإِلَىٰ رَبِّكَ فَٱرْغَبْ
“So when you have finished [your duties], then stand up [for worship]. And to your Lord direct [your] longing.”
(Surah Ash-Sharh, 94:7-8)

The Prophet (ﷺ) also said:

ٱللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لِأُمَّتِي فِي بُكُورِهَا
“O Allah, bless my Ummah in their early mornings.”
(Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 2238)

This introduction highlights the spiritual and practical benefits of a morning routine inspired by the Prophet (ﷺ). By starting our day with gratitude, prayer, and focus, we not only strengthen our relationship with Allah but also set a positive tone for the day ahead. Let us explore how the Prophet’s (ﷺ) morning habits can transform our lives.

Morning Routine Inspired by Muhammad SM

Waking Up Early with Gratitude

The morning of the Prophet (ﷺ) began well before sunrise. His first action upon waking was to acknowledge Allah’s blessings and express gratitude. He would say:

“Praise be to Allah who gave us life after He caused us to die, and to Him is the return.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 6312)

This simple yet profound dua reminds us of the blessing of life and instills gratitude at the very start of the day. Modern research supports the positive impact of gratitude on mental health, further emphasizing the wisdom in this practice.

Application:

Start your day with a moment of gratitude. Reflect on Allah’s blessings and make the dua of waking up to acknowledge the gift of life.

Performing Wudu and Offering Tahajjud

The Prophet (ﷺ) would often wake up in the last third of the night for Tahajjud prayer. This voluntary prayer is a time for intimate connection with Allah, free from distractions. He would perform wudu (ablution) to prepare for this act of worship.

Allah (SWT) praises those who pray during the night:

وَمِنَ ٱلَّيْلِ فَتَهَجَّدْ بِهِۦ نَافِلَةًۭ لَّكَ عَسَىٰٓ أَن يَبْعَثَكَ رَبُّكَ مَقَامًۭا مَّحْمُودًۭا
“And during the night, pray Tahajjud as an extra prayer for you; it is expected that your Lord will resurrect you to a praised station.”
(Surah Al-Isra, 17:79)

Application:

Even if waking for Tahajjud feels difficult, try starting with two rak’ahs. Gradually build this habit, seeking Allah’s closeness during the calm hours of the night.

Making Dua and Istighfar

After Tahajjud, the Prophet (ﷺ) would spend time making dua and seeking forgiveness. This act of istighfar is not just for sins but a reflection of humility and dependence on Allah.

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“Whoever says upon waking: ‘Praise be to Allah who gave us life after He caused us to die, and to Him is the return,’ his sins will be forgiven.”
(Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 141)

Application:

Dedicate time in the morning to seek forgiveness and make heartfelt supplications. This strengthens your relationship with Allah and sets a positive tone for the day.

Fajr Prayer and Qur’anic Reflection

One of the most significant aspects of the Prophet’s morning routine was the performance of Fajr prayer. The Qur’an highlights the importance of Fajr:

إِنَّ قُرْءَانَ ٱلْفَجْرِ كَانَ مَشْهُودًۭا
“Indeed, the recitation of the Qur’an at dawn is ever witnessed.”
(Surah Al-Isra, 17:78)

After offering Fajr prayer, the Prophet (ﷺ) would spend time reflecting on the Qur’an and engaging in the remembrance of Allah. This spiritual nourishment served as the cornerstone of his day.

Application:

Make the Fajr prayer non-negotiable in your routine. Afterward, spend a few moments reciting or reflecting on a verse from the Qur’an to start your day with divine wisdom.

Morning Adhkar (Remembrance of Allah)

The Prophet (ﷺ) emphasized the importance of morning adhkar (remembrances), which include praising Allah, seeking His protection, and expressing gratitude.

One of the commonly recited duas in the morning is:

ٱللَّهُمَّ بِكَ أَصْبَحْنَا وَبِكَ أَمْسَيْنَا وَبِكَ نَحْيَا وَبِكَ نَمُوتُ وَإِلَيْكَ ٱلنُّشُورُ
“O Allah, by Your leave we have reached the morning, and by Your leave we reach the evening, by Your leave we live, and by Your leave we die, and to You is the resurrection.”
(Sunan Abi Dawood, Hadith 5068)

These remembrances not only protect us but also provide peace and clarity to face the day ahead.

Application:

Incorporate morning adhkar into your routine. Use a small booklet or app to memorize and recite them daily.

Physical Activity and Personal Care

The Prophet (ﷺ) encouraged maintaining physical health and hygiene. He said:

“Indeed, your body has a right over you.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 5199)

Engaging in physical activity, even something as simple as walking, was a part of the Prophet’s life. He also placed great emphasis on personal hygiene, including brushing his teeth with a miswak.

Application:

Incorporate light physical activity into your morning routine, such as a walk or gentle stretches. Ensure proper hygiene, including brushing your teeth, grooming, and wearing clean clothes.

Starting Work with Purpose and Focus

The Prophet (ﷺ) valued time and began his day with a sense of purpose. He made the most of the early hours, as they are blessed with productivity. He said:

“O Allah, bless my Ummah in their early mornings.”
(Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 2238)

Application:

Identify your priorities for the day and start your work early. Dedicate this time to important tasks, as the early hours are filled with barakah (blessings).

Engaging in Acts of Kindness and Charity

The Prophet (ﷺ) often began his day by checking on his companions or engaging in acts of charity. This exemplifies the balance in his routine between personal development and serving others.

Allah (SWT) says:

“Establish prayer, give zakah, and bow with those who bow [in worship and obedience].”
(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:43)

Application:

Dedicate time in the morning to help someone in need, whether through a kind word, charity, or assistance.
