The State of Believers on the Day of Judgment

The Day of Judgment is the most significant and consequential event in Islamic eschatology. It is the day when every human being will be held accountable for their deeds, and the ultimate fate of every soul will be decided. For the believer, this is a day of both hope and fear, as it represents the culmination of a lifetime of faith, worship, and striving to live righteously in accordance with the teachings of Islam.

This blog post explores the state of believers on the Day of Judgment, with references from the Qur’an and Hadith. We will look at how believers are treated on that day, the rewards they receive, the challenges they face, and their final destination in the Hereafter.

The Day of Judgment in Islam

In Islam, the Day of Judgment is known as Yawm al-Qiyamah (يوم القيامة), a day when the entire universe will be destroyed, and all human beings will be resurrected for accountability. It is preceded by numerous signs, including the blowing of the trumpet by the Angel Israfil (عليه السلام), signaling the end of the world. All people, regardless of their faith or actions, will be resurrected from their graves, and each will be judged based on their deeds during their lifetime.

Qur’anic References to the Day of Judgment

The Qur’an speaks about the Day of Judgment in numerous places, describing the consequences of the actions of the disbelievers and the rewards promised to the believers. Some of the key verses about the Day of Judgment include:

Surah Al-Qiyamah (75:6-9):

“And when the sight is dazed, and the moon darkens, and the sun and the moon are joined, man will say on that Day, ‘Where is the place of escape?'”

This verse speaks about the immense chaos that will occur when the heavens and earth are altered, leaving no place for escape for the disbelievers.

Surah At-Tawbah (9:51):

“Say, ‘Never will we be struck except by what Allah has decreed for us; He is our protector.’ And upon Allah let the believers rely.”

This verse emphasizes the reliance on Allah and that everything, including the events of the Day of Judgment, is part of His divine plan.

The State of Believers on the Day of Judgment

The State of Believers: Before and After the Resurrection

Before the Resurrection

The believers, during the time before resurrection, will be in a state of anticipation and nervousness, awaiting the reckoning. However, there are certain distinguishing features that set believers apart from the disbelievers on this day.

  • Protection from the Sun’s Intense Heat:

On the Day of Judgment, the sun will come closer to the earth, causing extreme heat. The Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) mentioned in a Hadith that there will be seven groups of people who will be protected from the intense heat of the sun:

Sahih Bukhari:

“On the Day of Judgment, there will be seven [types of people] whom Allah will shade under His Shade: A just ruler, a youth who grew up in the worship of Allah, a man whose heart is attached to the mosque, two people who love each other for the sake of Allah, a man who is invited by a woman of beauty and position but he says: ‘I fear Allah,’ a man who gives in charity and hides it, and a person who remembers Allah in private and his eyes overflow with tears.”
(Sahih Bukhari)

These groups will be shaded from the unbearable heat of the sun, and they will be honored on the Day of Judgment.

  • The Bridge of Sirat (الصراط)

After the resurrection, all people will have to cross the Bridge of Sirat (الصراط), a bridge that is thinner than a hair and sharper than a sword. It is described as being suspended over Hell, and only those who have earned Allah’s mercy will successfully cross it.

The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:

Sahih Muslim:

“When the believers cross the bridge (Sirat), they will be shielded from the flames of Hell by the mercy of Allah. Some will be saved immediately, while others will be rescued after facing difficulties.”
(Sahih Muslim)

Believers will not experience the same suffering as disbelievers on this bridge, as Allah will guide them with His mercy.

After the Resurrection

Once the believers have crossed the Sirat, they will reach the final stage of their journey—their place of reward. The state of believers after the resurrection will be one of joy, relief, and eternal happiness.

  • The Gathering Place (الميزان)

The believers will be gathered in a place where they will face the weighing of their deeds. The Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) explained that the deeds of the believers will be weighed in the balance of justice. Every action, no matter how small, will be accounted for.

Sahih Muslim:

“The deeds of a believer will be weighed in the scales, and if they are heavy, they will be rewarded with eternal life in Paradise.”
(Sahih Muslim)

  • The Intercession of the Prophet

The Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) will intercede on behalf of his followers, asking Allah to forgive them and grant them entry into Paradise. His intercession will be a special mercy for the believers.

Sahih Bukhari:

“On the Day of Judgment, the Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) will intercede for his Ummah. Allah will grant him permission to intercede, and he will intercede for the believers until they are admitted into Paradise.”
(Sahih Bukhari)

The Reward for Believers on the Day of Judgment

For the believers, the ultimate reward on the Day of Judgment is entry into Jannah (الجنة), Paradise. The Qur’an and Hadith describe Paradise as a place of eternal bliss, free from pain, suffering, and death.

Qur’anic Descriptions of Paradise for the Believers

Surah Al-Insan (76:12-22):

“Indeed, the righteous will drink from a cup [of wine] whose mixture is of ginger. From a fountain within Paradise named Salsabeel. And they will be adorned with bracelets of gold, and their garments will be of fine green silk. And they will be guided to speak in words of peace.”

This passage describes the beautiful rewards awaiting the believers, from the luxury of their clothes to the peace they will enjoy in the presence of Allah.

Surah Al-Waqi‘ah (56:11-24):

“Indeed, the righteous will be in a secure place, amidst gardens and springs, dressed in fine silk and brocade, reclining on adorned couches. They will be rewarded for their patience and perseverance in this world.”

The Qur’an presents vivid imagery of the rewards for the believers, including lush gardens, eternal rest, and the company of the righteous.

Hadith Descriptions of Paradise

Sahih Muslim:

“In Paradise, there is a tree under which a believer will be able to sit and lean, enjoying the eternal delights. There will be no discomfort in Paradise, and the believer will be free from the trials of this world.”
(Sahih Muslim)

The Hadith further emphasizes that in Paradise, all desires will be fulfilled, and the believer will never experience any pain or distress.

The Distinction Between Believers and Disbelievers

The Day of Judgment will reveal the stark contrast between the fate of the believers and the disbelievers. While the believers will enjoy Allah’s mercy, the disbelievers will face His wrath. The Qur’an describes the difference in the following verses:

Surah Al-Infitar (82:10-12):

“And indeed, the disbelievers will be in Hell, to remain therein forever. They will not be able to escape from it, and they will face the punishment of Allah.”

Surah Al-Mutaffifin (83:10-11):

“Woe to those who give less [than due], who, when they take the measure from people, take it in full. But when they give by measure or weight to others, they give less.”

This contrast highlights the consequences of disobedience and the mercy and rewards granted to those who live in accordance with Allah’s commands.

Conclusion

The state of the believers on the Day of Judgment is one of mercy, justice, and ultimate reward. While the journey to that final moment is fraught with trials and tests, the believers who have lived their lives in faith, worship, and righteousness can look forward to the mercy of Allah and His infinite rewards.

The descriptions of Paradise in the Qur’an and Hadith serve as a source of hope and motivation for every believer to remain steadfast on the path of righteousness.

As we await the Day of Judgment, let us strive to live according to the teachings of Islam, seeking Allah’s forgiveness, mercy, and blessings.

Through our faith, good deeds, and reliance on Allah, we can hope to experience the eternal bliss of Paradise on that momentous day. May Allah make us among the righteous who will be granted His shade, mercy, and eternal reward in the Hereafter.
