The State of Unbelievers on the Day of Judgment
The State of Unbelievers on the Day of Judgment
The Day of Judgment is the ultimate moment of truth, where every soul will face the consequences of its actions. For the unbelievers, it will be a day of extreme fear, regret, and humiliation. They will witness the reality they once denied, standing helpless before Allah’s justice. The Quran describes their terror:
“And on the Day the witnesses will stand forth, that Day no excuse will benefit the wrongdoers, and for them is the curse, and they will have the worst home.”
(Ghafir 40:51-52)
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ described their suffering, saying:
“On the Day of Judgment, people will be gathered barefoot, naked, and uncircumcised.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, 6527)
The unbelievers will be left in despair, realizing that their power and wealth are useless. This article explores their journey—from resurrection to their final destination in Hellfire—highlighting the gravity of disbelief and the importance of faith.
The Horror of Resurrection
When the Trumpet (الصور) is blown, all of creation will be resurrected and gathered before Allah. The disbelievers, who denied the truth in their worldly life, will awaken in a state of shock and dread.
Allah describes their reaction:
“And the Trumpet will be blown, and at once they will rush from their graves to their Lord. They will say, ‘Woe to us! Who has raised us from our resting place?’ (It will be said), ‘This is what the Most Merciful had promised, and the messengers told the truth.'”
(Yasin 36:51-52)
The disbelievers will regret their rejection of faith but will realize that it is too late. They will stand in terror, realizing that they are about to face the consequences of their disbelief.
The Gathering and the Heat of the Sun
On that Day, all of humanity will be gathered on a vast plain, awaiting judgment. The sun will be brought extremely close, and people will suffer immensely from its heat. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“The sun will be brought near to the people on the Day of Judgment until it is a mile away from them. The people will be submerged in sweat according to their deeds. Some will have sweat up to their ankles, some to their knees, some to their waists, and some will be drowning in it.”
(Sahih Muslim, 2864)
While the righteous will be granted shade by Allah, the disbelievers will have no relief from the heat, and their suffering will only intensify.
The State of Fear and Humiliation
The disbelievers will be in a state of extreme fear, humiliation, and regret. They will realize that their arrogance and rejection of faith have led them to destruction.
Allah describes their condition:
“And you will see the criminals that Day bound together in chains, their garments of liquid pitch, and their faces covered by the Fire.”
(Ibrahim 14:49-50)
They will be shackled, dragged, and exposed to great humiliation, realizing that their power, wealth, and arrogance have no value anymore.
The Disbelievers’ Arguments and Regrets
The disbelievers will try to argue, make excuses, and blame others for their fate. However, their pleas will be rejected.
Allah says:
“And they will say, ‘Our Lord, indeed we obeyed our leaders and great men, and they led us astray from the (right) path. Our Lord, give them double the punishment and curse them with a great curse.’ “
(Al-Ahzab 33:67-68)
This shows that following corrupt leaders or societal pressures is no excuse in the sight of Allah. Every individual is responsible for their own choices.
The Final Judgment and Their Record of Deeds
Every soul will be presented with its Book of Deeds, which will contain every action, big or small. The disbelievers will be horrified when they see their records.
Allah says:
“And the Book (of deeds) will be placed, and you will see the criminals fearful of what is in it, and they will say, ‘Woe to us! What is this book that leaves nothing small or great except that it has enumerated it?'”
(Al-Kahf 18:49)
This moment will be filled with horror and regret, but there will be no escape from divine justice.
The Path to Hellfire
Once judgment is passed, the disbelievers will be driven towards Hellfire.
Allah describes their arrival:
“And those who disbelieved will be driven to Hell in groups until, when they reach it, its gates are opened, and its keepers will say, ‘Did messengers not come to you, reciting to you the verses of your Lord and warning you of this Day of yours?’ “
(Az-Zumar 39:71)
The disbelievers will enter Hell, where their punishment will be eternal.
Conclusion
The state of unbelievers on the Day of Judgment will be one of extreme fear, regret, and eternal suffering. They will face humiliation, unbearable heat, and the terrifying realization that their denial of truth has led them to destruction. Allah describes their fate:
“If only you could see when the criminals will hang their heads before their Lord (saying), ‘Our Lord, we have now seen and heard, so send us back (to the world); we will do righteousness. Indeed, we are now certain.’ “
(As-Sajdah 32:12)
However, their pleas will be in vain. The Prophet ﷺ warned:
“On the Day of Judgment, death will be brought in the form of a ram and slaughtered between Paradise and Hell.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, 4453)
This means punishment for the disbelievers will be eternal. May Allah guide us to faith and righteousness before it is too late.
