Quranic Verses

Blessed Land of Sham

Allah refers to the lands of Ash-Sham as a blessed region:

Surah Al-Isra (17:1):

“Exalted is He who took His Servant by night from Al-Masjid Al-Haram to Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.”

Ash-Sham includes Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa and its surrounding areas. This verse highlights the miraculous Night Journey (Isra) of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the sanctity of Masjid Al-Aqsa and its surroundings, which include parts of historical Syria (Bilad Al-Sham).

Prophets in the Blessed Land

Surah Al-Anbiya (21:71):

“And We delivered him [Prophet Ibrahim] and Lot to the land which We had blessed for the worlds.”

Many scholars agree that the “blessed land” refers to Ash-Sham. This verse refers to the land of blessings, often interpreted by Islamic scholars as the region of Sham (Greater Syria, including modern-day Syria, Palestine, Jordan, and Lebanon), which is frequently associated with divine favor in Islamic tradition.

Blessed Rain and Land

Surah Qaf (50:9):

“And We have sent down blessed rain from the sky and made grow thereby gardens and grain from the harvest.”

This verse highlights the blessing of rain as a source of life and sustenance, nurturing gardens and crops. While not specifically referencing Syria, the description of fertile lands can encompass regions like Sham, known for its agricultural richness and blessings in Islamic tradition.

(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 7094; Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2905)

(Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 21529)

“You will find the best of Allah’s slaves in Sham and the worst in Najd.”
(Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 21529)

This Hadith, like others, highlights the spiritual importance of Sham, often referred to as a land of blessings, and warns about tribulations and challenges arising from Najd. Scholarly interpretations of such narrations often take into account historical, spiritual, and geographical contexts.

Place of Refuge During Trials

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

(Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 16962)

It is considered a land of immense barakah (blessings) and is central to many Islamic eschatological events, including the descent of Isa (Jesus) in Damascus and the gathering of the righteous in Sham.

May Allah protect and bless the land of Syria and all its inhabitants.
