The Return of Prophet Isa AS and Qiyamah
The Return of Prophet Isa AS and Qiyamah
The belief in the return of Prophet Isa (عليه السلام), known as Jesus in Christian traditions, is an integral part of Islamic eschatology. According to Islamic teachings, Isa (AS) did not die on the cross but was raised up by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى) to Himself. His return is one of the most significant events that will occur before the Day of Judgment (Qiyamah). In the end times, Isa (AS) will come back to fulfill his divine mission, to defeat the Dajjal (Antichrist), restore justice, and lead the believers to a time of peace and righteousness before the final judgment.
This article will explore the return of Prophet Isa (AS), his role in the end times, the signs of Qiyamah, and the significance of his coming based on the Quranic verses and authentic Hadiths in Arabic and English.
The Quranic View of the Return of Prophet Isa (عليه السلام)
Although the Quran does not explicitly mention the detailed return of Prophet Isa (AS), it contains several verses that allude to his fate and his return. His mission in the end times is considered one of the most significant signs before Qiyamah, as indicated by the following verses.
Surah An-Nisa (4:157-158)
Translation:
“They did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it except the following of assumption. And they did not kill him for certain. Rather, Allah raised him to Himself. And ever is Allah Exalted in Might and Wise.”
This verse clearly denies the crucifixion of Prophet Isa (AS) and affirms that he was raised to Allah. Islamic scholars agree that Prophet Isa (AS) did not die but was taken by Allah, and he will return before the end of time to complete his mission.
Surah Az-Zukhruf (43:61)
Translation:
“And indeed, he (Isa) is knowledge of the Hour, so be not in doubt about it, and follow Me. This is a straight path.”
This verse is often interpreted as referring to Prophet Isa’s (AS) return being one of the great signs of Qiyamah. The “knowledge of the Hour” signifies that his return will be a clear indication of the approach of the end of times. His descent is the final preparation for the Day of Judgment.
The Hadiths on the Return of Prophet Isa (عليه السلام)
Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) spoke extensively about the return of Isa (AS), and these hadiths serve as a cornerstone of Islamic eschatology. They describe Isa’s (AS) descent, his role in the end times, and the events that will unfold after his return.
The Descent of Isa (عليه السلام)
The hadiths from both Sahih Muslim and Sahih Bukhari emphasize the role of Isa (AS) in the end times, with a particular focus on his physical return to earth. Prophet Isa (AS) will descend from the heavens to a world rife with injustice and corruption.
Hadith from Sahih Muslim:
Translation:
Abu Huraira (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: “By the One in Whose hand is my soul, Isa (the son of Maryam) will soon descend among you as a just ruler. He will break the cross, kill the pig, and abolish the jizyah tax. In his time, Allah will destroy all religions except Islam, and there will be peace and safety on Earth.”
This hadith illustrates the key actions of Prophet Isa (AS) upon his return: breaking the cross (symbolizing the rejection of the Christian belief of his crucifixion), killing the pig (symbolizing the rejection of unlawful practices in Islam), and abolishing the jizyah tax (as all people will embrace Islam during his reign). His return is seen as a unifying event that will bring peace and righteousness to the world.
The Battle with the Dajjal (Antichrist)
The Dajjal, or the False Messiah, is one of the greatest threats to humanity in the Islamic tradition. Prophet Isa’s (AS) return will coincide with the emergence of the Dajjal, and the two will confront each other in a final battle. This is depicted in numerous hadiths.
Hadith from Sahih Muslim:
Translation:
Tamim al-Dari (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: “The Hour (Qiyamah) will not come until a man from my nation will stand at the front of the people, holding his legs, and will have the people offer him food that they cannot refuse.”
This hadith is a metaphor for the final challenges and trials that will accompany the return of Isa (AS) and the defeat of the Dajjal. The Dajjal will have a powerful influence, but Isa (AS) will lead the Muslims in the final battle to defeat the forces of evil.
The Establishment of Justice and Peace
Once the Dajjal is defeated, Prophet Isa (AS) will establish justice and peace on earth. His reign will be characterized by prosperity, fairness, and the adherence to Islamic values.
Hadith from Sahih Bukhari:
عن عبد الله بن مسعود رضي الله عنه قال: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: “المهدي من عترتي من ولد فاطمة.”
Translation:
Abdullah bin Mas’ud (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said: “The Mahdi is from my family, from the descendants of Fatimah.”
Although this hadith is directly about the Mahdi, it is often linked to the return of Isa (AS) because both figures will play pivotal roles in the establishment of peace before Qiyamah. Imam Mahdi, a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), will lead the Muslims alongside Isa (AS) to restore justice in the world.
The Significance of the Return of Prophet Isa (عليه السلام)
The return of Prophet Isa (AS) is one of the most awaited events in Islamic eschatology. It represents the final triumph of good over evil. His descent will bring an end to oppression and injustice and herald the establishment of a just society in which Islam will be the dominant religion.
-
Defeating the Dajjal (Antichrist): One of the most crucial roles of Prophet Isa (AS) upon his return is the defeat of the Dajjal. The Dajjal will spread corruption, deceive people, and lead many astray. Isa (AS) will destroy the Dajjal and his influence over the people.
-
Restoration of Justice: Isa (AS) will break the cross and reject the distorted versions of faith. His return will mark the final re-establishment of the pure monotheistic belief in Allah (SWT), leading to a time of global peace and harmony under the guidance of Islam.
-
Abolition of Other Religions: Prophet Isa’s (AS) return will herald the end of false religions and ideologies. Islam will be the only true religion, and all people will embrace the faith under the leadership of Isa (AS). This will pave the way for the final events before Qiyamah.
Conclusion: The Return of Isa and the Final Triumph of Truth
The return of Prophet Isa (AS) is one of the most significant signs of the approaching Qiyamah (Day of Judgment). His mission will involve the defeat of the Dajjal, the establishment of justice and peace, and the final triumph of Islam over all other ideologies and false beliefs. His return will bring about a golden age before the final judgment by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَى). Muslims are encouraged to remain firm in their faith and anticipate his return, as it will mark the ultimate victory of truth over falsehood.
As believers, we are reminded to strengthen our understanding of the Islamic eschatology and prepare ourselves for the trials that will come before the Day of Qiyamah. May Allah guide us to stay steadfast in our faith and grant us the ability to remain firm in times of tribulation, awaiting the glorious return of Prophet Isa (AS) and the final victory of Islam.
