Benefits of Crying in Fear of Allah

Crying out of fear and love for Allah is a profound act of worship and a testament to the softness and sincerity of a believer’s heart. It reflects a deep awareness of Allah’s majesty, justice, and mercy and is a sign of a heart that is alive with iman (faith). This emotional response is praised in the Qur’an and Sunnah as a quality of the righteous and a path to Allah’s pleasure.

“And they fall upon their faces weeping, and it increases them in humility.” (Surah Al-Isra, 17:109)

This blog will explore the benefits of crying out of fear of Allah, supported by verses from the Qur’an and authentic Hadith.

A Sign of Taqwa (Consciousness of Allah)

Crying in fear of Allah demonstrates a heightened level of taqwa, as it signifies a heart that is conscious of its Creator. Such a heart reflects on Allah’s greatness, contemplates personal shortcomings, and fears His displeasure. This fear is not born out of despair but out of love and reverence for Allah.

“The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts become fearful.” (Surah Al-Anfal, 8:2)

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

“A man who weeps out of fear of Allah will not enter Hell until the milk returns to the udder.” (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 1633)

Benefit:

  • It protects the heart from arrogance, reminding the believer of their dependence on Allah.
  • It nurtures a sincere connection with Allah, fostering a strong bond of love and reverence.

Benefits of crying in fear of Allah

 Forgiveness of Sins

Crying out of fear of Allah is a means of attaining His forgiveness. Tears shed in solitude, while reflecting on one’s sins and Allah’s mercy, cleanse the soul. Allah’s mercy is vast, and sincere repentance accompanied by tears is among the most beloved acts to Him.

“Say, ‘O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.'” (Surah Az-Zumar, 39:53)

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Allah says: I do not combine two fears for My servant, nor two securities. If he fears Me in this world, I will grant him security in the Hereafter.” (Sunan Ibn Majah 4247)

Benefit:

  • It leads to a state of repentance and purification of the soul.
  • It brings the believer closer to Allah’s mercy and forgiveness.

A Gateway to Paradise

Crying out of fear of Allah is a noble act that earns the believer a place in Jannah (Paradise). This act signifies humility, sincerity, and a deep connection with Allah.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Two eyes will not be touched by the fire of Hell: an eye that weeps out of fear of Allah, and an eye that spends the night standing guard in the path of Allah.” (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 1639)

Benefit:

  • It becomes a shield against Hellfire.
  • It grants the believer eternal bliss and Allah’s pleasure.

Softening of the Heart

A heart that weeps in fear of Allah is a soft heart, one that is free from arrogance, heedlessness, and hardness. Allah praises such hearts in the Qur’an:

“Then your hearts became hardened after that, being like stones or even harder.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:74)

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Do not laugh excessively, for excessive laughter kills the heart.” (Sunan Ibn Majah 4193)

Benefit:

  • It nurtures humility and compassion for others.
  • It allows the believer to remain mindful of their ultimate purpose.

Acceptance of Supplications

Tears shed in humility and sincerity open the doors of Allah’s mercy, increasing the likelihood of one’s supplications being accepted.

“And when My servants ask you concerning Me – indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:186)

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Three supplications are not rejected: the supplication of a fasting person until they break their fast, the supplication of a just leader, and the supplication of the oppressed.” (Sunan At-Tirmidhi 3598)

Benefit:

  • It enhances the sincerity of one’s dua, making it more heartfelt.
  • It strengthens the connection between the believer and Allah.

A Means of Attaining Allah’s Love

Crying out of fear of Allah brings the believer closer to Him, as it reflects sincerity, humility, and dependence on Him. Allah loves those who turn to Him in repentance and humility.

“Indeed, Allah loves those who rely upon Him.” (Surah Aal-E-Imran, 3:159)

Benefit:

  • It earns the believer Allah’s love and increases their rank in the Hereafter.
  • It strengthens the heart’s attachment to Allah.

A Form of Worship in Privacy

The most sincere acts of worship are those performed in private, away from the eyes of others. Crying out of fear of Allah in solitude is among the most beloved forms of worship.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Seven will be shaded by Allah under His shade on the Day when there will be no shade except His shade… and a man who remembers Allah in seclusion, and his eyes overflow with tears.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 660, Sahih Muslim 1031)

Benefit:

  • It increases sincerity in worship and shields against showing off (riya).
  • It grants special rewards and protection on the Day of Judgment.

Practical Ways to Develop this Habit

  • Reflect on Allah’s Names and Attributes
Understanding Allah’s greatness, mercy, and justice fosters a sense of awe and humility.
  • Contemplate the Qur’an
Reflecting on verses of the Qur’an that speak about Allah’s mercy, the Hereafter, and the consequences of sin softens the heart.
  • Seek Solitude for Worship
Dedicate moments in solitude to reflect on your relationship with Allah, allowing emotions to flow naturally.
  • Remember Death and the Hereafter
Reflecting on the temporary nature of this world and the reality of the Hereafter motivates the heart to turn to Allah.

Conclusion: Benefits of crying in fear of Allah

Crying in fear of Allah is not a sign of weakness but a mark of true strength and faith. It signifies a heart that recognizes Allah’s greatness, fears His displeasure, and yearns for His mercy. Such tears are a source of immense reward, a purifier of sins, and a means of attaining Allah’s love and closeness.

May Allah grant us hearts that are humble, eyes that shed tears out of His fear, and lives that are centered around His remembrance.

“Our Lord, let not our hearts deviate after You have guided us and grant us from Yourself mercy. Indeed, You are the Bestower.” (Surah Aal-E-Imran, 3:8)
