The Heat of the Sun on the Day of Judgment

The Day of Judgment is an event of unimaginable horror and distress, described vividly in the Quran and Hadith. One of the greatest trials on that Day will be the intense heat of the sun, which will be brought so close to mankind that people will sweat according to their deeds. Allah describes the severity of that Day:

“The Day the sky will be like molten copper, and the mountains will be like wool, and no friend will ask about his friend.”
(Al-Ma’arij 70:8-10)

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ described the unbearable heat on that Day, saying:

“On the Day of Judgment, the sun will be brought near the creation until it is only a mile away from them.”
(Sahih Muslim, 2864)

The suffering will be immense, yet Allah will provide shade to the righteous. This article explores the impact of the sun’s heat on the Day of Judgment, those who will be protected, and how we can prepare for that Day through faith and good deeds.

The Day of Judgment: A Day of Unimaginable Heat

The Day of Judgment will be unlike any other day. The entire universe will undergo catastrophic changes, and among the most distressing conditions will be the sun’s proximity to mankind.

The Quranic Description of the Day of Judgment

Allah describes the immense turmoil of that Day in several verses:

“When the sun is wrapped up [in darkness].”
(At-Takwir 81:1)

“And when the stars fall, scattering.”
(At-Takwir 81:2)

This indicates a dramatic cosmic transformation, where the normal order of the universe will be disrupted, leaving humanity in utter distress.

Moreover, Allah describes the intensity of the Day in another verse:

“Man will say on that Day: ‘Where is the escape?’ No! There is no refuge. To your Lord, that Day, is the [place of] permanence.”
(Al-Qiyamah 75:10-12)

This verse emphasizes that there will be no place to hide from the torment, including the severe heat of the sun.

The Heat of the Sun on the Day of Judgment

The Sun’s Proximity to Mankind on the Day of Judgment

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ provided explicit details about the sun’s nearness and its effect on people.

The Sun Will Be Brought Close

One of the most terrifying events of the Day of Judgment is the sun’s extreme proximity to humanity. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ vividly described this scene, warning of the immense suffering people will endure due to the unbearable heat.

He ﷺ said:

“On the Day of Judgment, the sun will be brought near the creation until it is only a mile away from them.”
(Sahih Muslim, 2864)

Because of this, people will be drenched in sweat according to their deeds. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“People will sweat on the Day of Judgment until their sweat penetrates seventy cubits into the earth and will cover them up to their ears.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, 6532; Sahih Muslim, 2862)

This terrifying moment serves as a reminder of the importance of faith and righteous deeds. Those who lived a life of sincerity and piety will be among those shaded by Allah’s mercy, protected from the heat and distress of that Day.

The Effect of the Sun’s Heat

The Prophet ﷺ further described the effects of the sun’s heat:

“People will sweat on the Day of Judgment until their sweat penetrates seventy cubits into the earth and will cover them up to their ears.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, 6532; Sahih Muslim, 2862)

This Hadith paints a terrifying picture of the immense suffering people will endure due to the heat.

The Impact of the Sun’s Heat on Different People

Not all individuals will experience the same level of hardship. The righteous will be granted shade and protection, while others will suffer severely.

The Disbelievers and Sinners

For those who disbelieved in Allah and committed sins, the sun’s heat will be an added torment. Their agony will be a result of their own deeds, as Allah states:

“And when Hellfire is set ablaze.”
(At-Takwir 81:12)

Their suffering will be compounded by the unbearable heat, thirst, and distress.

The Righteous Under Allah’s Shade

Certain groups of people will be granted relief and shade from the sun’s heat. The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Seven categories of people will be shaded by Allah in His Shade on the Day when there will be no shade except His Shade.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, 660; Sahih Muslim, 1031)

The seven categories include:

  1. A just ruler
  2. A youth who grew up worshiping Allah
  3. A person whose heart is attached to the mosque
  4. Two people who love each other for Allah’s sake
  5. A man who resists the temptation of a woman of status and beauty, saying, ‘I fear Allah’
  6. A person who gives charity secretly
  7. A person who remembers Allah in private and sheds tears

These individuals will enjoy Allah’s mercy while others suffer from the scorching heat.

Seeking Protection from the Heat of That Day

Islam encourages believers to take measures to protect themselves from the hardships of the Hereafter.

Sincere Faith and Good Deeds

The Quran reminds believers:

“But as for he who feared standing before his Lord and restrained himself from desire, then Paradise will be his refuge.”
(An-Nazi’at 79:40-41)

Faith and self-discipline in this world will lead to safety on the Day of Judgment.

Regular Charity

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Every person will be in the shade of his charity until the judgment between the people is completed.”
(Musnad Ahmad, 17333)

Giving charity in this world will provide shade on the Day of Judgment.

Fasting as a Shield

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Fasting is a shield.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, 1894; Sahih Muslim, 1151)

Fasting protects against the heat of that Day by purifying the soul and earning Allah’s mercy.

Lessons from the Heat of the Sun on the Day of Judgment

The intense heat of the sun on the Day of Judgment serves as a powerful reminder of several crucial lessons for believers.

The Reality of the Hereafter

The descriptions of the sun’s proximity emphasize the certainty of the Hereafter. Allah warns:

“And [all] voices will be stilled before the Most Merciful, so you will not hear except a whisper.”
(Ta-Ha 20:108)

This reminds us to prepare for the inevitable.

The Importance of Good Deeds

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Protect yourselves from the Fire, even with half a date (in charity).”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, 1413)

Small acts of kindness can grant relief on that Day.

The Value of Seeking Allah’s Shade

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“Seven types of people will be shaded by Allah on the Day when there will be no shade but His Shade.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari, 660)

Acts like justice, charity, and sincere worship will shield us from the sun’s torment.

These lessons urge us to live righteously and seek Allah’s mercy before it is too late.

Conclusion

The intense heat of the sun on the Day of Judgment is a terrifying reality described in the Quran and Hadith. It will be a Day of immense distress, where the sun will be brought close to mankind, causing unbearable suffering. Allah says:

“It will be the Day when people will be like scattered moths, and the mountains will be like wool fluffed up.”
(Al-Qari’ah 101:4-5)

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ warned that on this Day, people will sweat profusely due to the sun’s nearness:

“People will sweat on the Day of Judgment until their sweat penetrates seventy cubits into the earth.”
(Sahih Muslim, 2862)

However, Allah will grant shade to the righteous, such as those who give charity, remain steadfast in faith, and act justly. As believers, we must prepare for that Day through sincere worship, good deeds, and seeking Allah’s mercy. May Allah grant us His shade and protection from the hardships of that Day.
