The Total Destruction of Earth Before Revival
The Total Destruction of Earth Before Revival
The total destruction of Earth before Qiyamah (the Day of Judgment) is one of the most terrifying and significant events in Islamic eschatology. This destruction will occur when Angel Israfil (AS) blows the Trumpet (As-Sur) by the command of Allah (SWT). The first blowing will cause instant death to all creatures, while the second blowing will bring them back to life for the Day of Judgment.
The Quran describes this moment as a time of great chaos and fear:
Quranic Reference
“وَنُفِخَ فِي الصُّورِ فَصَعِقَ مَن فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَن فِي الْأَرْضِ إِلَّا مَن شَاءَ اللَّهُ ۖ”
“And the Trumpet will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and the earth will fall dead, except whom Allah wills.”
(Surah Az-Zumar 39:68)
The skies will tear apart, mountains will crumble, oceans will boil, and nothing will remain. This destruction is a reminder that the world is temporary, and we must prepare for Akhirah (the Hereafter).
In this blog, we will explore the two blowings of the Trumpet, the destruction of the universe, and the resurrection of all souls with Quranic and Hadith references.
The First Blowing of the Trumpet: The Beginning of the End
The first blowing of the Trumpet (As-Sur) will mark the beginning of the total destruction of the universe. It will be sounded by Angel Israfil (AS) upon the command of Allah (SWT). The moment it is blown, every living being will die, and the entire cosmos will be thrown into chaos.
Quranic Description
Allah (SWT) describes this catastrophic moment in the Quran:
“وَنُفِخَ فِي الصُّورِ فَصَعِقَ مَن فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَن فِي الْأَرْضِ إِلَّا مَن شَاءَ اللَّهُ ۖ”
“And the Trumpet will be blown, and whoever is in the heavens and the earth will fall dead, except whom Allah wills.”
(Surah Az-Zumar 39:68)
At this moment:
- The earth will shake violently.
- Mountains will turn into dust.
- The oceans will catch fire.
- The sky will be torn apart.
Hadith Reference
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:
“مَا بَيْنَ النَّفْخَتَيْنِ أَرْبَعُونَ”
“Between the two blows of the Trumpet, there will be an interval of forty.”
(Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2955)
The first blow will end all life, and a period of divine silence will follow before the resurrection begins.
Hadith Reference: Angel Israfil (AS) Waiting for the Command
Angel Israfil (AS) has been entrusted with the task of blowing the Trumpet (As-Sur) to signal the end of the world and the resurrection of all creation. Islamic teachings emphasize that Israfil (AS) has been ready since the beginning, waiting for Allah’s command.
Hadith Reference
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) described the state of Israfil (AS) in a hadith:
“كَيْفَ أَنْعَمُ وَقَدِ الْتَقَمَ صَاحِبُ الْقَرْنِ الْقَرْنَ، وَحَنَى جَبْهَتَهُ، وَأَصْغَى سَمْعَهُ، يَنْتَظِرُ مَتَى يُؤْمَرُ أَنْ يَنْفُخَ فَيَنْفُخَ؟”
“How can I be at ease when the bearer of the Trumpet (Israfil) has put it to his mouth, inclined his forehead, and is listening carefully, waiting to be commanded to blow it?”
(Sunan At-Tirmidhi, Hadith 2431)
Israfil’s (AS) Readiness
- Israfil (AS) holds the Trumpet near his lips, ready to blow at any moment.
- He constantly listens for Allah’s command.
- This highlights the imminence of the Day of Judgment, which can occur at any time.
This hadith serves as a powerful reminder that we must always be prepared for the Hereafter, as Qiyamah can arrive unexpectedly.
The Destruction of the Universe
When the Trumpet is blown, unimaginable destruction will unfold.
The Sky Will Tear Apart
Quranic Verse:
“إِذَا السَّمَاءُ انشَقَّتْ (١)”
“When the sky is split apart.”
(Surah Al-Inshiqaq 84:1)
The sky, which appears strong and endless, will break apart.
The Mountains Will Disappear
Quranic Verse:
“وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْجِبَالِ فَقُلْ يَنسِفُهَا رَبِّي نَسْفًا (١٠٥) فَيَذَرُهَا قَاعًا صَفْصَفًا (١٠٦)”
“And they ask you about the mountains. Say, ‘My Lord will completely destroy them and leave the earth a smooth, level plain.'”
(Surah Taha 20:105-106)
Even the strongest structures in the world will vanish.
The Oceans Will Catch Fire
Quranic Verse:
“وَإِذَا الْبِحَارُ سُجِّرَتْ (٦)”
“And when the seas are set on fire.”
(Surah At-Takwir 81:6)
The seas will erupt into flames, causing a global catastrophe.
The Death of Every Living Being
When Angel Israfil (AS) blows the Trumpet (As-Sur) for the first time, it will cause the instant death of every living creature in the heavens and the earth. This includes humans, jinn, animals, and even the angels, except for those whom Allah (SWT) wills to keep alive.
Quranic Description
Allah (SWT) describes this terrifying moment:
“كُلُّ مَنْ عَلَيْهَا فَانٍ (٢٦) وَيَبْقَىٰ وَجْهُ رَبِّكَ ذُو الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ (٢٧)”
“Everyone upon it (the earth) will perish, and there will remain the Face of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor.”
(Surah Ar-Rahman 55:26-27)
As the Trumpet is blown:
- All humans will collapse and die.
- Jinn and animals will perish.
- Even the angels will die at the command of Allah (SWT).
Hadith Reference
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:
“يَمُوتُ النَّاسُ عِنْدَ النَّفْخَةِ الْأُولَىٰ”
“People will die at the first blowing of the Trumpet.”
(Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2955)
After this, a period of silence will follow, and nothing will remain except Allah (SWT), the Ever-Living and Eternal.
The Second Blowing of the Trumpet: The Revival of Mankind
After the total destruction of the universe, there will be a period of divine silence where nothing will remain except Allah (SWT), the Ever-Living. Then, Angel Israfil (AS) will be commanded to blow the Trumpet (As-Sur) a second time, bringing all of humanity back to life for the Day of Judgment (Qiyamah).
Quranic Description
Allah (SWT) describes this moment in the Quran:
“ثُمَّ نُفِخَ فِيهِ أُخْرَىٰ فَإِذَا هُمْ قِيَامٌ يَنظُرُونَ”
“Then it will be blown again, and at once they will be standing, looking on.”
(Surah Az-Zumar 39:68)
The graves will split open, and every soul will be resurrected in its original form. The righteous and the wicked will rise, preparing for their final judgment before Allah (SWT).
Hadith Reference
The Prophet (PBUH) said:
“يَنْزِلُ اللَّهُ مَطَرًا فَيَنْبُتُونَ مِنْهُ كَمَا يَنْبُتُ الْبَقْلُ”
“Allah will send down rain, and people will grow from it like vegetation.”
(Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2955)
This resurrection is the start of eternal life, where each person will be judged based on their deeds and rewarded or punished accordingly.
Islamic Scholars’ Explanations
Islamic scholars have provided detailed interpretations regarding the destruction of the universe and the first blowing of the Trumpet (As-Sur). Their explanations clarify how this event aligns with Quranic and Hadith references.
Ibn Kathir (رحمه الله)
- In his Tafsir, Ibn Kathir explains that the first blowing of the Trumpet will cause universal destruction.
- He states that every living being will perish, including the inhabitants of the heavens and the earth, except for those whom Allah wills to spare.
Imam Al-Qurtubi (رحمه الله)
- In his book “At-Tadhkirah”, he describes how the first blowing will be a moment of immense terror.
- He explains that the mountains will disintegrate, and the sky will split apart, as described in the Quran:
“إِذَا السَّمَاءُ انشَقَّتْ”
“When the sky is split apart.”
(Surah Al-Inshiqaq 84:1)
Imam An-Nawawi (رحمه الله)
- He discusses the hadith of Israfil (AS) waiting for the command of Allah (SWT), showing how the Day of Judgment is near.
- He warns that believers should prepare for the Hereafter as this world is temporary.
These explanations emphasize that the first blowing of the Trumpet is a definite reality and that believers must reflect and prepare for the Afterlife.
Conclusion
The total destruction of Earth before the Day of Judgment (Qiyamah) is a terrifying reality mentioned in the Quran and Hadith. When Angel Israfil (AS) blows the Trumpet (As-Sur) for the first time, it will mark the end of all life. The heavens and the earth will be shattered, the mountains will crumble, the oceans will overflow, and all living beings will perish. This event serves as a powerful reminder of the temporary nature of this world and the certainty of the Hereafter.
Final Quranic Reminder
Allah (SWT) warns in the Quran:
“وَيَوْمَ يُنفَخُ فِي الصُّورِ فَفَزِعَ مَن فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَن فِي الْأَرْضِ إِلَّا مَن شَاءَ اللَّهُ ۚ وَكُلٌّ أَتَوْهُ دَاخِرِينَ”
“And on the Day the Trumpet is blown, whoever is in the heavens and the earth will be terrified, except whom Allah wills. And all will come to Him humbled.”
(Surah An-Naml 27:87)
After this destruction, Allah (SWT) will command the second blowing of the Trumpet, bringing every soul back to life for judgment and accountability. As believers, we must prepare for this reality by strengthening our faith, worship, and good deeds so that we may succeed in the Akhirah (Hereafter). May Allah (SWT) guide us to the right path. Ameen.
