Belief in Angels in Islam: A Fundamental Aspect of Faith

اللَّهُ يَصْطَفِي مِنَ الْمَلَائِكَةِ رُسُلًا وَمِنَ النَّاسِ
“Allah chooses messengers from among the angels and from among the people.”
(Quran 22:75)

This verse highlights the distinction between angels and humans but also points to the fact that angels have specific roles as messengers, just as human prophets do.

Another significant verse discussing angels is:
وَيُسَبِّحُونَهُ لَيْلًا وَنَهَارًا لَا يَفْتُرُونَ
“They glorify Him night and day, and do not slacken.”
(Quran 21:20)

This verse highlights the devotion of the angels, who are always engaged in worship and carrying out their assigned duties.

The Role of Angels in Islam

 

Belief in Angels

Angels have various important duties in Islam. Some of their primary functions include:

  • Delivering Revelation: One of the most important roles of angels is to convey Allah’s messages to His prophets. The Archangel Jibreel (Gabriel) is the chief messenger responsible for delivering divine revelations to the prophets. The Quran says:
    نَزَلَ بِهِ الرُّوحُ الْأَمِينُ
    “The Trustworthy Spirit [Jibreel] has brought it down.”
    (Quran 26:193)
  • Recording the Deeds of Humans: Allah has appointed angels to record the deeds of each individual. These angels are known as the Kiraman Katibin (Noble Recorders). They record everything that a person does, whether good or bad.
    وَإِنَّ عَلَيْكُمْ لَحَافِظِينَ
    “And indeed, [appointed] over you are keepers.”
    (Quran 82:10)
  • Protecting and Guarding Humans: Angels also serve as protectors, guarding humans from harm. They are assigned to guard individuals from physical and spiritual harm and to guide them towards good deeds.
  • Assisting in the Afterlife: In the Hereafter, angels play a significant role in guiding souls to their final destinations. They are responsible for interrogating the dead in their graves and guiding them to their ultimate judgment.
  • Angels of Death: Among the most well-known angels are those responsible for taking the souls of the deceased. The Angel of Death, Azrael (Malak al-Mawt), is tasked with this significant role. Allah says:
    قُلْ يَتَوَفَّاكُمْ مَلَكُ الْمَوْتِ الَّذِي وُكِّلَ بِكُمْ
    “Say, ‘The angel of death who has been entrusted with you will take your souls.'”
    (Quran 32:11)

The Names and Functions of Key Angels

 

  • Jibreel (Gabriel): Jibreel is the most revered angel in Islam. He is responsible for delivering the messages from Allah to the prophets. He played a key role in the revelation of the Quran to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
    وَإِنَّهُ لَتَنزِيلُ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ
    مَرَجِيعُكُمْ إِلَيْهِ إِذَا أَمَرَ فَجَاءَتْهُ
    (Quran 26:193-4)
  • Mika’il (Michael): Mika’il is the angel responsible for bringing nourishment to Allah’s creatures. He provides sustenance to humans, such as rain, which leads to the growth of crops.
  • Israfil (Raphael): Israfil is the angel responsible for blowing the trumpet to announce the Day of Judgment. His sound will signal the end of the world and the beginning of the Afterlife.
  • Malik: Malik is the chief of the angels who guard Hell. He is often mentioned in hadiths as overseeing the punishment of the damned in Hell.

Belief in Angels as Part of the Islamic Faith

 

Belief in angels is one of the six pillars of faith in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) explained the importance of this belief in a hadith narrated by Jibreel:
فَأَخْبِرْنِي عَنْ الإِيمَانِ
“Tell me about faith.”
قَالَ: أَنْ تُؤْمِنَ بِاللَّهِ وَمَلَائِكَتِهِ
“That you believe in Allah and His angels…”
(Sahih Muslim, 1/25)

This hadith underscores that belief in angels is a fundamental aspect of being a true believer in Islam.

The Role of Angels in Worship and Protection

 

Angels have an essential role in the worship of Allah. In addition to their duties in the divine realm, they also assist and support believers in their acts of worship. For instance, they protect people from evil and whisper reminders of good deeds. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

قال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: “إذا جلسَ عبدٌ في مجلسٍ يذكرُ اللهَ فيه، تحفُّهُ الملائكةُ، وتغشاهُ الرحمةُ.”
(Sahih Muslim)
“When the servant of Allah sits in a gathering remembering Allah, the angels surround them, and Allah’s mercy envelops them.”
(Sahih Muslim)

Additionally, angels play an essential role in protecting believers from harm and guiding them toward righteousness. A believer’s actions are closely monitored, with angels recording both good and bad deeds.

The Importance of Angels in Daily Life

 

In Islam, angels are not only important in the unseen realm but also play a crucial role in daily life. They are constantly present, recording our actions and protecting us. Their presence serves as a reminder for Muslims to live righteous lives, for every action is being observed.

 وَإِنَّ عَلَيْكُمْ لَحَافِظِينَ * كِرَامًا كَاتِبِينَ
“And indeed, [appointed] over you are keepers, noble recorders.”
(Quran 82:10)

This verse emphasizes the role of angels as recorders, documenting every deed, good or bad, and reminding Muslims to maintain good conduct.

 قال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: “إذا همَّ العبدُ بحسنةٍ، فلم يعملها، كتبها الله له عنده حسنةً كاملةً.”
“The Prophet (PBUH) said: ‘If a servant intends to do a good deed but does not carry it out, Allah records it as a full good deed.'”
(Sahih Bukhari)

This hadith highlights the angels’ role in recording intentions, showing that even the thought of doing good is rewarded.

Through these roles, angels encourage Muslims to stay mindful of their actions, reinforcing the importance of living a life pleasing to Allah. Their presence in daily life is both a reminder and a source of motivation to remain righteous.
