The Collapse of the Kaaba Before the Final Hour

The Kaaba, located in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, is the most sacred site in Islam. It is the Qiblah, the direction towards which Muslims around the world face during prayer, and it is also the focal point for the Hajj pilgrimage. Revered as the “House of Allah,” the Kaaba holds immense spiritual significance for Muslims and symbolizes the unity of the global Muslim community. However, Islamic eschatology teaches that before the Final Hour (Qiyamah), there will be several major signs, one of which is the eventual collapse of the Kaaba.

Though the Quran does not explicitly mention the collapse of the Kaaba before the Day of Judgment, its significance as a holy symbol is repeatedly emphasized. Allah says in the Quran:

“إِنَّ أَوَّلَ بَيْتٍ وُضِعَ لِلنَّاسِ لَلَّذِي بِبَكَّةَ مُبَارَكًا وَهُدًى لِّلْعَالَمِينَ”
(Surah Al-Imran 3:96)
“Indeed, the first house [of worship] established for mankind was that at Bakkah [i.e., Makkah], blessed and a guidance for the worlds.”

The Hadith literature, however, contains several prophetic traditions foretelling the collapse of the Kaaba. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:

“يُخَرِّبُ الْكَعْبَةَ ذُو السُّوَيْقَتَيْنِ مِنْ أَبِيدَةِ الحبَشَةِ”
(Sahih Muslim 2922)
“The Kaaba will be destroyed by a man with two thin legs from the people of Abyssinia.”

The collapse of the Kaaba serves as a powerful symbol of the impending end of times and the final judgment, urging believers to remain vigilant and prepared for the inevitable reality of Qiyamah.

The Quranic References to the Kaaba

While the Quran does not explicitly mention the collapse of the Kaaba in relation to the end of times, it emphasizes the importance of the Kaaba and its role in Islam. The Kaaba is referred to as the “House of Allah” (Bayt Allah) in several verses.

The Kaaba as the Sacred House

The Kaaba is described as the first house of worship built for humanity, designed for the worship of the one true God, Allah. Allah says in Surah Al-Imran:

“إِنَّ أَوَّلَ بَيْتٍ وُضِعَ لِلنَّاسِ لَلَّذِي بِبَكَّةَ مُبَارَكًا وَهُدًى لِّلْعَالَمِينَ”
(Surah Al-Imran 3:96)
“Indeed, the first house [of worship] established for mankind was that at Bakkah [i.e., Makkah], blessed and a guidance for the worlds.”

This verse highlights the Kaaba as the first house of worship established for the guidance of humanity. Its spiritual importance is eternal, and its existence symbolizes the unity of the Muslim Ummah and the worship of Allah.

The Kaaba as the Qiblah for Prayer

In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah commands the believers to face the Kaaba when they pray:

“فَوَلِّ وَجْهَكَ شَطْرَ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ وَحَيْثُ مَا كُنتُمْ فَوَلُّوا وُجُوهَكُمْ شَطْرَهُ”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:144)
“So turn your face toward al-Masjid al-Haram, and wherever you may be, turn your faces toward it.”

This verse indicates the Kaaba’s central role in the lives of Muslims, as it is the focal point for prayer across the globe.

The Collapse of the Kaaba in the Hadith

Several Hadiths mention the eventual collapse or destruction of the Kaaba before the Day of Judgment. These narrations serve as signs of the approaching Qiyamah, marking the end of the world as we know it.

The Collapse of the Kaaba in Sahih Muslim

In a famous Hadith narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar (رضي الله عنه), the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) described the eventual destruction of the Kaaba:

“يُخَرِّبُ الْكَعْبَةَ ذُو السُّوَيْقَتَيْنِ مِنْ أَبِيدَةِ الحبَشَةِ”
(Sahih Muslim 2922)
“The Kaaba will be destroyed by a man with two thin legs from the people of Abyssinia (Ethiopia).”

This Hadith refers to a man from the Abyssinian region who will eventually destroy the Kaaba. This event is considered a major sign of the end of times and is believed to mark a significant shift in the world order. The “man with two thin legs” is often interpreted as a reference to the Abyssinian king or leader who will play a key role in this destruction.

The Destruction of the Kaaba in the Final Days

In another narration, the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:

“يُهَاجِرُ النَّاسُ إِلَىٰ فَجِّ يَبْنِيهِ وَيَجِيءُ الرَّجُلُ فَيَحْطِمُهُ حَتَّى يُسَاوِي فَجَّ سَجِلِّ”
(Sahih Muslim 2966)
“People will migrate to a place where it is safe, and a man will come and demolish it until it becomes a flat plain.”

This Hadith reinforces the idea that the Kaaba will be completely destroyed, flattened, and no longer exist as the central place of worship before the end of times.

The Destruction of the Kaaba in the Context of the Mahdi and Dajjal

According to some Hadiths, the Kaaba’s destruction will occur in the context of other eschatological events, including the arrival of the Mahdi (the guided one) and the appearance of the Dajjal (the Antichrist). The final days will be marked by chaos and a shift in the world’s religious and political order.

“يَجِئُ النَّاسُ مِنْ جَمِيعِ أَمَاكِنِهِمْ وَيُخَرِّبُونَ الْكَعْبَةَ وَيَحْجُرُونَ فِيهَا فَتُهْلِكُ أَمَارَاتِهِمْ”
(Sunan Abu Dawood 4297)
“People will come from all directions to destroy the Kaaba, and its structure will be obliterated.”

This Hadith depicts a period of intense turmoil before the Day of Judgment, with the Kaaba being one of the key symbols of destruction. The fall of such a revered structure signifies the end of an era of religious piety and the loss of sacred landmarks before the final judgment.

Significance of the Collapse of the Kaaba

The Collapse as a Sign of the Final Hour

The collapse of the Kaaba is considered one of the major signs of Qiyamah. Its destruction represents the end of the most sacred symbol of Islam, signaling the near arrival of the final judgment. The Kaaba’s destruction represents a loss of religious landmarks and an era of chaos and loss of faith.

In Islamic eschatology, the destruction of the Kaaba is connected to the world becoming devoid of true guidance, as the place where Muslims pray will no longer exist.

A Symbol of the Loss of Tawhid (Monotheism)

The Kaaba stands as the symbol of Tawhid, the oneness of Allah. Its collapse signifies the coming of a time when true belief in Allah will be lost, and the world will be engulfed in disobedience. The Hadiths that mention the collapse of the Kaaba refer to a period when Islam will no longer be practiced in its purest form.

The Destruction in the Context of the Appearance of the Mahdi

According to Islamic tradition, the arrival of the Mahdi will occur after the Kaaba’s destruction. The Mahdi is a righteous leader who will restore justice and faith in the world, guiding people back to Islam. His role in the final days will be pivotal in re-establishing the true way of worship before the end times.

The Role of the Collapse in the End of Times

A World Without Sacred Landmarks

The collapse of the Kaaba symbolizes a world in which sacred landmarks no longer hold their significance. It is not just the physical destruction of a building, but the loss of spiritual and religious unity. It reflects a time when faith itself will be at risk, and the chaos preceding the Day of Judgment will be unparalleled.

A Wake-up Call for Believers

The Hadiths about the collapse of the Kaaba serve as a stark reminder for Muslims to remain steadfast in their faith. It is a warning that even the most sacred things in the world will eventually be destroyed, and believers must be prepared for the coming trials and tribulations before the Day of Judgment.

The Role of the Kaaba in Islamic Identity

The Kaaba’s destruction also signifies a loss of religious identity for the Muslim Ummah. It is a critical reminder of the impermanence of this world and the importance of preparing for the Hereafter, as no worldly structure can withstand the power of Allah’s will.

Conclusion

The collapse of the Kaaba before the Final Hour is a significant sign of the approaching Day of Judgment. The Kaaba, as the most sacred place in Islam, symbolizes the oneness of Allah and the unity of the Muslim Ummah. Its destruction, as mentioned in both the Quran and Hadith, signifies the loss of true faith and guidance in the world. This event reminds Muslims of the transient nature of worldly things and the ultimate reality of the Hereafter.

In the Quran, Allah refers to the Kaaba as the first house of worship, blessed and a guide for humanity:

“إِنَّ أَوَّلَ بَيْتٍ وُضِعَ لِلنَّاسِ لَلَّذِي بِبَكَّةَ مُبَارَكًا وَهُدًى لِّلْعَالَمِينَ”
(Surah Al-Imran 3:96)

The Hadiths about the collapse of the Kaaba provide vivid descriptions of the end times, warning believers to remain steadfast in their faith. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said:

“يُخَرِّبُ الْكَعْبَةَ ذُو السُّوَيْقَتَيْنِ مِنْ أَبِيدَةِ الحبَشَةِ”
(Sahih Muslim 2922)
“The Kaaba will be destroyed by a man with two thin legs from the people of Abyssinia.”

This event emphasizes the importance of preparation for the Day of Judgment, urging Muslims to stay committed to their faith and actions in anticipation of the end of times.
