The Fire That Will Gather People on Judgment Day

“Indeed, those who disbelieve and avert [people] from the way of Allah will be gathered to Hell in a state of thirst.”

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) also described the fire in vivid terms, emphasizing its severity:

“إِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَتَجْأَرُ إِلَى اللَّهِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ القِيَامَةِ قَالَتْ اللَّهُمَّ أَذِنْ لِي فِي قَضَاءٍ بَيْنَ عِبَادِكَ”
(Sahih Muslim 2868)
“Indeed, Hellfire cries to Allah every day, and on the Day of Judgment, it will ask permission to torment the disbelievers and sinners.”

This fire, which will gather people for their final judgment, serves as a stark reminder of Allah’s justice and the importance of living a life of righteousness and faith. It compels believers to reflect on their actions and seek repentance before the final day.

The Quranic Perspective on the Fire of Qiyamah

 

The Quran describes the fire of the Day of Judgment as something beyond human comprehension. It is the culmination of all the warnings given to humanity in the world and is depicted in numerous places within the Qur’an. The fire is not merely a physical manifestation but a reflection of divine justice and wrath.

The Gathering in Hellfire

Allah (SWT) speaks about the gathering of the disbelievers and sinners in Hell in Surah Al-Furqan:

“وَعُرِضُوا عَلَىٰ رَبِّكَ صَفًّا لَقَدْ جِئْتُمُونَا كَمَا خَلَقْنَاكُمْ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ بَلْ زَعَمْتُمْ أَنْ لَن نَجْعَلَ لَكُمْ مَوْعِدًا”
(Surah Al-Furqan 25:37)
“And they will be presented before your Lord in rows, and He will say, ‘You have come to Us as We created you the first time. But you thought We would never make for you an appointment.'”

This verse refers to the gathering of people on the Day of Judgment, where the disbelievers and sinners will be thrown into Hellfire. The verse emphasizes that the gathering before Allah is inevitable, and the fire is the ultimate consequence for those who reject Allah’s signs.

The Descriptions of the Fire

In Surah Al-Mulk, Allah mentions the fire’s vastness and its terrifying nature:

“إِنَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِآيَاتِ رَبِّهِمْ لَهُمْ عَذَابُ جَهَنَّمَ وَلَا يَحْجُبُ عَنْهُمْ لَا يَفِرُّونَ مِنْهُ”
(Surah Al-Mulk 67:6)
“Indeed, those who disbelieve in the verses of their Lord will have the punishment of Hell. It will not be averted from them, and they will not be able to escape from it.”

This verse portrays Hellfire as inescapable for those who reject faith and disobey Allah. The punishment of the fire is inevitable, and no one can avoid it on the Day of Judgment.

In Surah Al-Hajj, Allah describes the fire as a force that will burn the faces of the wrongdoers:

“إِنَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا وَصَدُّوا عَنْ سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ سَتَحْشُرُونَ إِلَىٰ نَارِ جَهَنَّمَ حَشْرًا”
(Surah Al-Hajj 22:51)
“Indeed, those who disbelieve and avert [people] from the way of Allah will be gathered to Hell in a state of thirst.”

The fire will consume the faces of the disbelievers, causing them great suffering as a reflection of their evil deeds.

The Role of the Fire in Judgment

The Quran also emphasizes the role of the fire in purifying the wrongdoers, as mentioned in Surah At-Tawbah:

“وَإِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَمَوْعِدُهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ”
(Surah At-Tawbah 9:52)
“And indeed, Hell is their promised place for all of them.”

The Hadiths Regarding the Fire of Qiyamah

In a famous hadith narrated by Abu Huraira (رضي الله عنه), the Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“يُحْشَرُ النَّاسُ يَوْمَ القِيَامَةِ فِي سَبْعِينَ أَلْفًا يَدْفَعُهُمْ النَّارُ إِلَىٰ جَهَنَّمَ”
(Sahih Muslim 2866)
“On the Day of Judgment, people will be gathered in groups of seventy thousand, and the fire will push them towards Hell.”

This hadith highlights that on the Day of Judgment, the fire will play an active role in gathering people, pushing them toward their ultimate fate based on their deeds. It emphasizes that Hell is not just a passive consequence but a force that will actively pull people toward it.

The Severity of Hellfire’s Heat

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) also described the intense heat of the fire:

“إِنَّ جَهَنَّمَ لَتَجْأَرُ إِلَى اللَّهِ كُلَّ يَوْمٍ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ يَوْمُ القِيَامَةِ قَالَتْ اللَّهُمَّ أَذِنْ لِي فِي قَضَاءٍ بَيْنَ عِبَادِكَ”
(Sahih Muslim 2868)

This hadith emphasizes that the fire of Hell is far beyond anything we can imagine in this world. Its severity and intensity are beyond human comprehension, serving as the ultimate punishment for those who fail to repent and believe in Allah.
