How the Quran Will Intercede for Believers
How the Quran Will Intercede for Believers
The Day of Judgment is a day of great reckoning, a day when every soul will be judged for its deeds. On this day, intercession will play a critical role in determining the fate of many. While the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) will intercede on behalf of his Ummah, another intercessor will stand before Allah to plead for the forgiveness of the believers—the Quran. The Quran, as the divine book revealed by Allah, holds a special place on the Day of Judgment.
It is not just a book of guidance, but it will serve as an intercessor for those who have followed its guidance during their lives. In this blog post, we will explore how the Quran will intercede for the believers on the Day of Judgment, referring to Quranic verses and Hadiths that explain its role in the afterlife.
The Intercession of the Quran: An Introduction
Intercession, or Shafa’ah, is a concept that plays a significant role in Islamic eschatology. On the Day of Judgment, various intercessors, including the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), the angels, and the Quran itself, will intercede on behalf of the believers. The Quran’s intercession is unique because it is not just a physical entity but a divine book filled with guidance, laws, stories, and wisdom that have the power to intercede for the followers of Allah.
Surah Al-Isra (17:9):
“إِنَّ هَٰذَا الْقُرْآنَ يَهْدِي لِلَّتِي هِيَ أَقْوَمُ وَيُبَشِّرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ الَّذِينَ يَعْمَلُونَ الصَّالِحَاتِ أَنَّ لَهُمْ أَجْرًا كَبِيرًا”
“Indeed, this Qur’an guides to that which is most suitable and gives good tidings to the believers who do righteous deeds that they will have a great reward.”
(Al-Isra 17:9)
This verse highlights the Quran’s ability to guide the believers to the right path, leading them to reward and ultimately salvation. On the Day of Judgment, it will be this guidance that will serve as the Quran’s intercession for the believers.
The Quran’s Intercession for Its People
The Quran will intercede for those who believed in it, recited it, and lived by its teachings. The Quran will be a means of mercy, asking Allah to forgive the believers, no matter how great their sins were. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) has stated in various Hadiths that the Quran will intercede for those who read and follow it.
Hadith from Sahih Muslim:
“قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: يَجِيءُ الْقُرْآنُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ فَيَقُولُ: يَا رَبِّ! إِنَّ فُلَانًا قَدْ أَحْبَتَنِي وَقَرَأَنِي وَعَمِلَ بِهِۦ فَأَشْفِعْ لَهُۥ”
“The Quran will come on the Day of Judgment and say: O Lord! So and so used to love me, read me, and act upon my verses, so I ask You to intercede for him.”
(Sahih Muslim)
In this Hadith, the Quran speaks to Allah, asking for the intercession of the believer who used to recite it regularly. This Hadith emphasizes the close relationship between the Quran and its followers, a relationship that will result in the Quran pleading for its followers on the Day of Judgment.
The Quran as a Witness for the Believers
The Quran will also act as a witness for its followers, testifying to their belief in Allah and the good deeds they performed according to its guidance.
Surah Al-Baqarah (2:2):
“ذَٰلِكَ الْكِتَابُ لَا رَيْبَ فِيهِ هُدًى لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ”
“This is the Book about which there is no doubt, a guidance for those conscious of Allah.”
(Al-Baqarah 2:2)
The Quran, as the ultimate source of guidance, will testify to the actions of its followers. Allah will accept the Quran’s testimony, and those who adhered to its guidance will be rewarded with eternal bliss.
Hadith from Sahih Muslim:
“يُدْنِي الْقُرْآنُ وَيُدْنِي فَارِسُهُۥ فَيُحَدِّثُ عَنْهُ فِى عَادَاتِهِۦ”
“The Quran will be brought closer, and its companion will be drawn closer. It will speak on his behalf about his deeds.”
(Sahih Muslim)
This Hadith shows that the Quran will intercede for those who lived by it, speaking on their behalf before Allah.
The Quran’s Ability to Forgive Sins
One of the remarkable aspects of the Quran’s intercession is its ability to forgive sins. The Quran not only guides believers but can also act as a means of atonement for past mistakes. It is through the Quran’s intercession that many who have repented and sought forgiveness will be saved.
Surah At-Tahrim (66:9):
“يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا۟ تُوبُوا۟ إِلَىٰ اللَّهِ تَوْبَةًۭ نَّصُوحًۭا عَسَىٰ رَبُّكُمْ أَنْ يُكَفِّرَ عَنكُمْ سَيِّئَاتِكُمْ وَيُدْخِلَكُمْ جَنَّاتٍۢ تَجْرِى مِن تَحْتِهَا ٱلْأَنْهَارُ”
“O you who have believed, repent to Allah with sincere repentance. Perhaps your Lord will avert from you your evil deeds and admit you into gardens beneath which rivers flow.”
(At-Tahrim 66:9)
Repentance is a powerful act, and the Quran itself encourages sincere repentance, knowing that Allah may forgive the sins of the repentant. The Quran’s intercession further strengthens the mercy of Allah on the Day of Judgment.
The Quran and Its Importance in the Hereafter
On the Day of Judgment, the Quran will not only intercede but will also shine as a witness to the faith and righteousness of its followers. It will act as a guide, a savior, and a protector for those who have dedicated their lives to understanding and following its teachings. The Quran’s intercession is closely tied to the actions of the believer during their lifetime, specifically their relationship with the Quran and their commitment to its principles.
Surah Al-Furqan (25:30):
“وَقَالَ الرَّسُولُ يَا رَبُّ إِنَّ قَوْمِى اتَّخَذُوا۟ هَٰذَا الْقُرْآنَ مَهْجُورًۭا”
“And the Messenger has said, ‘O my Lord, indeed my people have taken this Qur’an as a thing abandoned.'”
(Al-Furqan 25:30)
This verse demonstrates that the Quran’s followers will be held accountable for their relationship with it. Those who abandoned the Quran will not benefit from its intercession. However, those who read it, reflected on it, and implemented its teachings will find the Quran advocating for them on the Day of Judgment.
Hadith from Sahih al-Bukhari:
“قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: اقْرَءُوا۟ الْقُرْآنَ فَإِنَّهُۥ يَأْتِى يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ شَفِيعًۭا لِّأَصْحَابِهِۦ”
“Recite the Quran, for it will come as an intercessor for its companions on the Day of Judgment.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari)
This Hadith reinforces the idea that the Quran, as the divine book of guidance, will act as a powerful intercessor for its companions—those who recite it, memorize it, and live by it.
The Quran’s Intercession for the Ahl al-Quran (People of the Quran)
The intercession of the Quran is not limited to the recitation alone but extends to those who are devoted to its study, memorization, and implementation. These individuals will receive great benefits on the Day of Judgment.
Hadith from Sahih Muslim:
“يُقَالُ لِصَاحِبِ الْقُرْآنِ: اقْرَأْ وَارْتَقِ وَرَتِّلْ كَمَا كُنتَ تُرَتِّلُ فِى دُنياكَ فَإِنَّ مَنزِلَكَ عِندَ ءَاخِرِ ءَايَتِكَ”
“It will be said to the companion of the Quran: ‘Recite and rise, and recite as you used to recite in the world, for your rank is at the last verse you recite.'”
(Sahih Muslim)
This Hadith indicates that the Quran’s followers, especially those who memorize and recite it regularly, will experience a unique elevation in status in the Hereafter. The intercession of the Quran will elevate them to higher ranks in Paradise.
Conclusion: The Quran as an Intercessor for Believers
The Quran will play a crucial role on the Day of Judgment as an intercessor for those who followed its guidance. Its intercession will be a means of mercy for the believers, forgiving their sins and elevating their status in the Hereafter. The relationship a believer maintains with the Quran in this life is pivotal to receiving the Quran’s intercession on the Day of Judgment.
As Muslims, we are encouraged to recite the Quran regularly, to reflect on its meanings, and to live by its teachings. By doing so, we invite the Quran to be our intercessor on the Day of Judgment, securing our place in Allah’s mercy and ultimately in Paradise.
May Allah grant us the ability to recite and live by the Quran, and may He allow the Quran to intercede for us on the Day of Judgment. Ameen.
