Morning and Evening Adhkar: A Path to Tranquility

Morning and evening adhkar (remembrances) are among the most significant practices in a Muslim’s daily life. These beautiful supplications, drawn from the Qur’an and Sunnah, serve as a powerful means to connect with Allah (SWT), seek His protection, and cultivate a sense of inner peace. By engaging in regular remembrance, a believer ensures their spiritual and emotional well-being, gaining the blessings and mercy of Allah throughout the day and night.

Allah (SWT) emphasizes the importance of dhikr in the Qur’an:

“O you who have believed, remember Allah with much remembrance. And exalt Him morning and afternoon.”
(Surah Al-Ahzab, 33:41-42)

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) also highlighted its virtue, saying:

“The most beloved deed to Allah is for you to die while your tongue is moist with the remembrance of Allah.”
(Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 17272)

This article explores the benefits of morning and evening adhkar, along with specific examples, to help every believer incorporate this vital practice into their daily routine.

Morning and evening adhkar

Importance of Morning and Evening Adhkar

Morning (بعد الفجر) and evening (بعد العصر) adhkar are particularly emphasized in Islamic teachings. These supplications act as a fortress for the believer, offering protection against evil, ensuring peace of mind, and drawing one closer to Allah.

Allah (SWT) commands believers in the Qur’an to remember Him abundantly:

“So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:152)

The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) also emphasized the importance of dhikr (remembrance of Allah). He said:

“The example of the one who remembers his Lord and the one who does not is like the example of the living and the dead.”
(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6407)

Benefits of Adhkar

  • Protection from Evil: Adhkar shield the believer from shayateen (devils) and harmful creatures, as promised in authentic narrations.
  • Increased Barakah: They bring blessings (barakah) into one’s life, family, and daily endeavors.
  • Mental Peace: Engaging in dhikr soothes the heart and alleviates stress, as Allah says:

“Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.”
    (Surah Ar-Ra’d, 13:28)

  • Strengthening Faith: Regular remembrance strengthens the believer’s relationship with Allah and enhances taqwa (God-consciousness).
  • Forgiveness and Reward: Allah forgives sins and multiplies rewards for those who engage in consistent dhikr.

Morning Adhkar

Ayat al-Kursi (آية الكرسي)

One of the most powerful verses in the Qur’an, it ensures Allah’s protection throughout the day.

(Translation): “Allah! There is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation tires Him not. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:255)

Sayyid al-Istighfar (سيد الاستغفار)

(Translation): “O Allah, You are my Lord, none has the right to be worshipped except You. You created me, and I am Your servant, and I abide by Your covenant and promise as best as I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your favor upon me and acknowledge my sin, so forgive me, for verily none can forgive sin except You.”
(Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6306)

Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq, and An-Nas

Recite these three surahs thrice in the morning for protection throughout the day.

(Translation): “Say, ‘He is Allah, [who is] One…”
(Surah Al-Ikhlas, 112:1-4)

(Translation): “Say, ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak…”
(Surah Al-Falaq, 113:1-5)

(Translation): “Say, ‘I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind…”
(Surah An-Nas, 114:1-6)

Evening Adhkar

Dhikr of Protection

The Prophet (ﷺ) taught the following supplication for evening protection:

(Translation): “In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing is harmed on earth nor in the heavens, and He is the All-Hearing, All-Knowing.”
(Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3869)

Recitation of Surah Al-Baqarah (Last Two Verses)

(Translation): “The Messenger has believed in what was revealed to him from his Lord…”
(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:285-286)

Praise of Allah (Tasbih, Tahmid, Takbir)

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

(Translation): “Glory be to Allah, all praise is for Allah, there is no deity except Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.”
(Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2691)
