The Importance of Tawheed in Iman (Oneness of Allah)

Tawheed, the belief in the oneness of Allah, is the foundation of Islam and forms the essence of Iman (faith). It is the most important and central principle in Islam, and without Tawheed, a person’s Iman cannot be complete.

In this post, we will explore the linguistic and religious significance of Tawheed, its importance in Iman, and the profound impact it has on a Muslim’s relationship with Allah. We will provide references from the Quran and Hadith in both Arabic and English to shed light on the significance of Tawheed in Islamic theology.

Linguistic Meaning of Tawheed

The Arabic word “Tawheed” (توحيد) comes from the root word “وحد” (W-H-D), which means “to make one” or “to unify.” The word Tawheed literally means “the act of making something one” or “declaring something to be one.” In an Islamic context, Tawheed refers to the belief in the oneness of Allah – that Allah is one, without any partners, associates, or equals. It is the concept of worshiping Allah alone and acknowledging that He is the sole creator, sustainer, and ruler of the universe.

Tawheed is the essence of Islamic belief and represents the highest form of faith. To accept Tawheed is to affirm that Allah is the one true God, and to deny it is to commit the gravest error of polytheism (Shirk). Tawheed is so fundamental in Islam that it is often referred to as the “shahada” (testimony of faith), where a Muslim declares: “Ashhadu alla ilaha illallah” (I bear witness that there is no god but Allah).

The Importance of Tawheed in Iman

Tawheed is not just a belief but the foundation upon which all other aspects of Iman (faith) are built. Without belief in the oneness of Allah, no other part of Iman is complete. In fact, all the pillars of Islam hinge upon the acceptance of Tawheed. It is the first and most important belief a Muslim holds, and it shapes every action and thought a believer has.

Tawheed is the Core of the Shahada

The Shahada, or the Islamic declaration of faith, is the first and foremost pillar of Islam. It consists of two parts: “La ilaha illallah” (There is no god but Allah) and “Muhammadur rasulullah” (Muhammad is the messenger of Allah). The first part of the Shahada, “La ilaha illallah”, emphasizes Tawheed and asserts that Allah is the only deity worthy of worship. It is the essence of Iman and a prerequisite for entering into the fold of Islam.

In the Quran, the message of Tawheed is emphasized repeatedly, making it clear that the Oneness of Allah is central to the Muslim faith. This declaration is not just a verbal statement but a deep and firm belief that must be reflected in one’s actions and worship.

Tawheed as the First Commandment in Islam

In Islam, Tawheed is considered the first and most important commandment. It is the most emphasized belief in the Quran, and every prophet and messenger sent by Allah called their people to worship Allah alone. The first commandment in the Quran begins with the message of Tawheed.

Surah Al-Baqarah (2:21-22):
Translation:
“O mankind, worship your Lord who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous.”

This verse directly addresses all of humanity, inviting them to recognize and worship the one true God, Allah, who created everything in existence. Worshiping Allah alone (Tawheed) is the path to righteousness and the foundation of a believer’s faith.

Tawheed in the Quran

The concept of Tawheed is repeated throughout the Quran, with numerous verses emphasizing the oneness of Allah and the importance of worshiping Him alone. Here are some Quranic references that highlight Tawheed:

The First and Foremost Command

The Quran emphasizes that Allah is the only deity worthy of worship, and everything in the universe is a sign of His oneness.

Surah Al-Ikhlas (112:1-4):
وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُۥۤۡۛۛۗۗۧ جَبْنُكَ;

Translation:
“Say, ‘He is Allah, [Who is] One,
Allah, the Eternal Refuge.
He neither begets nor is born,
Nor is there to Him any equivalent.'”

This chapter highlights the oneness of Allah and His uniqueness in all aspects. Tawheed is emphasized through the assertion that Allah has no partners, no equals, and that He is eternal and self-sustaining.

The Ultimate Reality of Tawheed

Surah An-Nisa (4:36):
Translation:
“And worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents, good treatment, and to relatives, orphans, the needy, the neighbor, the companion, the traveler, and those whom your right hands possess. Indeed, Allah does not like those who are self-deluding and boastful.”

This verse emphasizes the centrality of worshiping Allah alone and highlights the importance of living righteously, treating others with kindness, and avoiding the sin of polytheism (Shirk). It underlines that Tawheed should be reflected not only in one’s belief but also in their actions toward others.

The Importance of Tawheed in Iman

Tawheed in the Hadith

The Hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) further elaborate on the significance of Tawheed and the consequences of associating partners with Allah (Shirk). These narrations shed light on how Tawheed should be practiced and the immense rewards associated with adhering to the oneness of Allah.

The Shahada and Its Importance

One of the key Hadiths that highlights the importance of Tawheed is the Hadith of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) regarding the Shahada. This Hadith illustrates that belief in the oneness of Allah is a prerequisite for entering Paradise.

Sahih Muslim (1/63):
“مَن قَالَ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّـهُ دَخَلَ الجَنَّةَ”
Translation:
“Whoever says ‘There is no god but Allah’ will enter Paradise.”

This Hadith signifies that the basic and most fundamental belief in Islam—Tawheed—leads to the eternal reward of Paradise. The declaration of Tawheed is the key to salvation in Islam.

The Virtue of Tawheed and Its Reward

Tawheed holds an immense spiritual significance in Islam. It is a belief that purifies the heart and strengthens one’s connection with Allah. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) emphasized the importance of holding onto Tawheed throughout one’s life.

Sahih Bukhari (6/52):
“مَن لَقِيَ اللَّـهَ لَا يُشْرِكُ بِهِ شَيْـًۭٔا دَخَلَ الجَنَّةَ”
Translation:
“Whoever meets Allah without associating anything with Him, will enter Paradise.”

This Hadith stresses the importance of maintaining Tawheed throughout life and the reward for doing so. It highlights that worshiping Allah alone, without associating any partners with Him, is the most virtuous act a Muslim can perform.

The Punishment of Shirk

Shirk (associating partners with Allah) is the greatest sin in Islam, and it is the only sin that Allah does not forgive if a person dies without repenting from it. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) warned against the grave consequences of Shirk and emphasized that it nullifies a person’s faith.

Sahih Muslim (1/2):
“إِنَّ اللَّهَ لا يَغْفِرُ أَنْ يُشْرَكُ بِهِ وَيَغْفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ لِمَن يَشَاءُ”
Translation:
“Indeed, Allah does not forgive associating partners with Him, but He forgives anything else for whom He wills.”

This Hadith underscores the severity of Shirk and the importance of maintaining the purity of Tawheed. To deviate from Tawheed by associating partners with Allah is to risk eternal punishment.

Tawheed and Its Impact on the Muslim Life

The belief in Tawheed is not limited to intellectual acceptance but must manifest in every aspect of a Muslim’s life. It affects a person’s actions, their relationships, their worship, and their sense of purpose in life. Tawheed shapes a Muslim’s worldview, guiding them to act in accordance with Allah’s commandments and to seek His pleasure above all else.

Tawheed and Worship

The primary goal of Tawheed is to establish the worship of Allah alone. Everything a Muslim does should be done for the sake of Allah. Tawheed fosters a deep sense of humility and devotion, encouraging believers to seek Allah’s guidance in every matter and to perform acts of worship sincerely and wholeheartedly.

Tawheed and Accountability

Tawheed also instills a sense of accountability in the believer. Knowing that Allah is the only true deity and that everything in the universe is under His control, a Muslim becomes conscious of their actions, realizing that they are accountable to Allah alone.

Tawheed and Social Interactions

Tawheed encourages Muslims to uphold justice, honesty, and kindness in their interactions with others. Since everything is ultimately governed by Allah’s will, a believer strives to reflect the attributes of Allah in their dealings, treating others with fairness and respect.

Conclusion

Tawheed is the foundation of Iman and the key to a believer’s connection with Allah. It is the belief in the oneness of Allah and the exclusive right of Allah to be worshiped. Tawheed is the essence of Islam, and everything in a Muslim’s life should be shaped by this belief. The Quran and Hadith emphasize the importance of Tawheed and its centrality to a believer’s faith. By adhering to Tawheed, a Muslim can attain peace, purpose, and salvation in this life and the Hereafter.

Tawheed is not just a theoretical concept but a practical guide for every aspect of life. It encourages Muslims to live their lives in accordance with Allah’s will, always remembering that He is the ultimate authority and the only one worthy of worship. By staying true to the principle of Tawheed, Muslims are able to strengthen their faith, purify their hearts, and earn the eternal reward of Paradise.
